Hi Jeff,

Edward and Betty's son James b 1812 Broadbottom m Ellen Holland b 1823 Hattersley.
Youngest daughter Lydia Moss b 1862 Newton m John Whiteford b 1859 Edinburgh.
Daughter Elizabeth Whiteford b 1886 Newton m John Marshall b 1887 Dukinfield.
Eldest son Jack Marshall b 1913 Newton m Annie Schofield (still living, 100 in January next year) and then myself b 1944 Barrow.
Agree none of the death entries for Moss or Fitton in the Cheshire BMD match up and the Hayfield entry in 1851 isn't her either (£10 lost!).
Anyway I'll keep plugging away hoping something will turn up.

Hello Jeff,

Haven't progressed much since unlocking Edward Moss's previous life which I have gleaned from your previous posts and Ancestry, including the Cark connection (Cark is near my birthplace of Barrow).
Thomas Fitton died 15 Aug 1860 at Hirst Clough, Broadbottom but there is no mention of Betty on the death certificate so still not sure whether he married Betty or not.  I'm pretty sure Betty Fitton and Betty Moss (nee Sidebottom) are the same person because her son James Moss is present in the Hodge Fold home in 1841.
What became of Bett(e)y after 1851 is still puzzling.
Betty was only 16 when marrying Edward who was by then 52 but why Edward was 'jealous' of his wife is strange. She bore him 4 further children and the inquest remark of "having married a young woman a few years ago" is untrue as Edward and Betty had been married for 25 years, which is more than just a few!
Guess we'll never know what was going on in his head.
I must go back to Broadbottom again and have another good look around as I have plenty of connections with the place and it is a pleasant little corner of Cheshire.
Edward was my great (x3) grandfather.
Regards

Thanks.

Cheshire / Betty Moss (nee Sidebottom) in Broadbottom

Had read about the unfortunate death of 'Old Mr Moss' in Mottram on this website although can't find topic now.  Edward Moss had married Betty Sidebottom after the death of his first wife and they had four children, Sarah 1810, John 1810, James 1812 and Esther 1814.
After the death of Edward in 1834 Betty appears on the 1841 census living as Betty Fitton with Thomas Fitton and her son James.
Again on the 1851 census she is Betty Fitton.
In 1860 Thomas Fitton is found dead in bed having died from heart disease according to the coroner.
I can't find Betty (Moss, Fitton or Sidebottom) on the 1861 census.
So, a couple of questions:
Is Betty Fitton the same as Betty Moss?
Did Betty Moss marry Thomas Fitton - I can't find any evidence  and  what became of her after the 1851 census.
Have visited this nice area of Broadbottom recently (my grandparents and father lived at Summerbottom) and photographed the Hodge Fold buildings and Moss Lane although didn't know about the family Moss connection at the time.
A lead as to the fate of Betty would help draw a line under this particular branch.  Thanks.
