Hi Claire -
I do believe you absolutely pointed me in the right direction with the architect suggestion, thank you so much!  I found in Gye's Bath directory of 1819, J Lowder, architect of Chapel House, Lansdown Grove!  Moral of the story - never trust the grey matter filing system!  :D

Thanks, Dave.  That is a giant step in the right direction!  :)

Hi Claire - As far as the architect aspect goes - I had in my head that that was a different branch of the family, but I can't find where in my head I had made that determination (and I have been sorting through the grey matter)!  So maybe he was, and thanks for pointing me in that direction.  It does sound like a rather odd building for a school, I have to say.

Thanks so much Trish! My apologies to anyone I confused.
I will 'axe' that date from my tree as soon as I send this.
Oh well, another blunder!  :) Not the first, no doubt not the last.

Does anyone know how I should get started tracing a John Lowder, Esq Jr of Lansdowne Place in Bath?  He married a Mary D'Oyly (whose D'Oyly family is written down to the nth degree) in May 1804 but John himself seems to have sprung out of the woodwork.  I haven't even been able to find John Esq Sr, which does seem to be the logical next step....
Thanks!

Mainly Erpingham,  Norfolk, as far as I can tell.  Notoriously cagey family when it came to antecedents!

Mabel -
:-[ - that's mine.  I got the date off BMD.  I am very new to this and didn't realise at first the value of writing down my sources.
Sorry because it means I will be perpetuating errors, no doubt.
Daphne

I should clarify that I had chosen that particular Mary Cubitt because she was the right age & right place, as far as I could tell.

Thanks also Mabel and Trish! :)
As far as selling up in 1821, I had found out that Woolmer Richard Cubitt graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in medicine (this from the UG webpage while my little book on Bowmanville says it was Edinburgh).  So maybe that is why he sold up?  I wonder what Mary (and the boys) did?  Maybe she reestablished her life in Suffolk?

Aaak - sorry - the computer had hung when I first pressed post and now I see I am repeating myself.
