My granduncle, Peter Johnson, was second mate on the Castle Rock and was in charge of the boat which rescued the men from the Danish barque 'Else'. I have the medal he was awarded for that rescue and a copy of a letter sent to the 'Shetland Times' by the mate of the 'Else' - Jens Miller- in which he gives an account of the rescue and commends Peter for his seamanship. |I also have a clock which we believe came from the Castle Rock and a photo album containing the following photos of seamen from the Castle Rock:
W.R. Stewart 3rd Officer, S. P.Bowyer Sailmaker, G.A. Waterman apprentice, D. Harvey apprentice (janem's granfather?) F. T. Mann apprentice (also Miss B.A. Mann -presumably asister)
There is also a photo of R. Beaton, Glasgow but it does not say if he was on Castle Rock.
The letter from David Harvey would be very intersesting. I do not know when Peter joined the Castle Rock but following the rescue he was 2nd Officer on the ss Cyrus.
It would be interesting to have a picture of the Castle Rock.
