The Common Room / Re: Etiquette for adding people to a family tree online
« on: Tuesday 19 February 13 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
Ok, now I'm suitably scared, I have made all my trees private!!! :o

It's so sad isn't it, that there are people out there who live to hack into people's personal information.

The Lighter Side / Re: When you find an error on someone else's tree, do you tell them?
« on: Tuesday 19 February 13 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
If it is a serious researcher who has made a mistake I would contact them. If it is clearly a work of fiction I stay well away from them so they nare not tempted to copy more of my genuine info. I have an American fiction artist who has one of my Northumbrian relatives who died in WW1 in her tree with US parents and birthplace. I know he is mine and he is English. He was born in Amble, has a headstone there and I have his widow's penny in my cupboard. Not planning to tell the plagiarist that though.

Recently I found 6 trees which had my great grandfather in them, and all had his parents wrong (they were born after him!!!) and when I contacted them all to let them know of the error, they all denied having him in their tree.  I have put this down to a glitch on Ancestry, and now I just ignore people who have the wrong information.  I know that my information is correct so I reckon it's up to them if they want to continue with wrong information in their trees.

....put a list of the names I am researching and the areas, at the end of my posts?  It seems like a "signature", but I can't find where or how to do this.

The Lighter Side / Re: Bygone sounds

The milk float and the chink of the bottles placed on steps in the very early hours of the morning, when you knew you could turn over and have another sleep.

Actually, we do still have a milkman who comes down our road to visit a couple of houses.  Until fairly recently he did use an electric float and I would occasionally hear it at about 3am, and it would take me right back to my childhood.  Unfortunately he now uses a 4x4 which doesn't have the same effect!

I miss the electric float too.  We lived near the Co-op dairy, so that was a familiar sound.  Takes me right back {sigh}

I heard a door slam not so long ago which reminded me of train doors slamming, something we don't hear anymore, it's all hiss, swish & thump these days  :)  This got me thinking about other sounds that are no longer with us, the musical 'ting' of a cash register & the old fashioned telephone ring.
Does anyone have other fond memories of bygone sounds?

jane

I miss the sound of the fog-horn on misty mornings.

Having read this again I do wonder just why he'd had 18 housekeepers!

Lol, yes I did wonder myself!

Thanks for that information.  I agree, it is very difficult to keep things private, especially if you want to be able to share information. It's a fine line to walk.  If I want to add information from someone's tree, I first of all ask if they would mind, and state how that person fits into my family.

It is sad, but nowadays it is very difficult to trust anyone.
