Will read all it says know that they did go overseas although I'm not sure if my granpa did.  He was from Port Glasgow and regiment is family tradition.  Will look what it says.  Have you tried the regimental museum in Stirling Castle?  It is my granpas original demob papers I have in original war office issue - in better condition than my passport !!

It wasn't myself who got tested but my dads cousin in the US I think they are trying to persuade me to get tested as well as we never left the west of Scotland area and can trace all branches of family back.  Their is Ulrike on my mums side (her family from North-East coast).

Could be as the Carruthers still live in area.  My gran was born in 1890s so some time ago now.  I was born in 1970s and I have original certificates hence I know the spellings.  When my great grandparents were alive their children used the Carruthers spelling to distance themselves from anti-Irish prejudice.  Good luck with your search.

Yes thats them.  Have all census information and everything for Niel/Neil and descendants after move to Port Glasgow and I know that Gaelic was first language spoken at home even when my grandpa's grandparents were alive.  His mum wasn't from the isles and did not speak gaelic.  Have tried Mull website but with no success.  Thanks for reply.  Lots of males in line as Niel only had one daughter called Katie/Catharine, then evens out a bit.

My advice is to sign up for genetic family testing as the results can be fascinating.  I look very like my grandmother and DNA testing has shown that DNA of the family is now most common  in Estonia/Lithuania and Poland.

I live in Linwood and I'll have a look for you.  Not a lot of old Linwood exists just a couple of buildings.  Was it a roman catholic or protestant marriage ?

Renfrewshire / Re: What can I glean from middle names?

If you look at aunts and uncles you can be named after them.  My great grandmother was Betsy Meffan Thomson Finlayson named after her uncle's wife whose maiden name was Betsy Meffan Thomson her mother having been Betsy Meffan.  Sometimes its after an auntie or uncle who are just close friends of the family and no actual blood relation.  Or if you are really unfortunate from 1920s on you can be named after the popular filmstar of the day.
