Hello rootschat world. 
I am looking for a business that my Great-great grandfather Matthew Clancy owned. It was called Clancy's Tavern located in Homewood, Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
Is there a site somewhere that I can find listings of old business anywhere?

I don't have any concrete numbers on Samuel. I know that he was 18 or 19 when he filled out the draft card so guessing he was born 1898/1899.   I've heard that his mother's first or middle name was Anna and that was the name given to Samuel oldest child(my grandmother). I have no idea when he immigrated to the US but I know it was thru Boston not New York. When he married it was to Helen Loftus in 1919.

Hello Lindylou. How are you doing? I might have some possible links that might help or steer you in the direction you are looking for.
While I was researching my Clancy ancesters I found out that they were involved in the IRA and also fought against the black and tans. The following sutes might help you on your search of your ancestors or at the very least the history behind it all.

There were alot of fighting between the IRA and the Black and  Tans during 2 big events in the 2 countries conflicts. Looking up info on these 2 events might also help youe search.

It is likely that one main Irish figure will keep popping up and that might be Micheal Collins.
Also if you go to a site written by an Irishman you might not get a whole picture or the Irish view of things.

Sorry I haven't answered back yet . I've been away for a while.

So back to the O'Briens. I just have old some names and dates to give but I hope they will help either or both of Kerry and Ninatoo.


The Irish sept where I found the O'Brien surname was of the Dalcassian origin, which was a branch of the McNamara's, seated in north Clare and their ancestor, Cormac Cas was the son of 3rd century King of Munster, Oilioll Olum. This is where I found the  Clancy's connection to the O'Briens. The Clancys were hereditary brehons to the O'Briens who had great power in county Clare.

Apparently one of the last Clancys brehons rescued Murrough O'Brien(Chief of the Dalcassian Sept). Story goes that in 1543 Murrough returned home to County Clare after accepting a peerage from Henry VIII. The O'Brien clanmen rallied together and ambushed Murrough and was saved when this unknown Clancy( cannot find a first name) diverted the clansmen wrath elsewhere and hide Murrough to safety.  I guess in laymans terms the Clancys were not of the same class as the O'Briens.  They were bodyguards/personal policemen to the O'Briens.

Thats all I have but I find this history fascinating and I am still digging so I will keep you informed. Sorry my info isn't very accurate in the dates though, but it is interesting to say the least .  Have a great day.
