Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Please help repair.

Can i suggest you don't change the background because you then take the subject out of his context. The brick wall places the person in a particular place at a particular time. The brick wall has been recently repointed and if it is a public building there may be records that allow quite precise dating.
Changing the background doesn't improve the picture, it destroys it and turns it into a fantasy, making it no longer an historical document.

Yes, the William Hewitt born Turriff 1846 is my great grandmother's brother. The family name is rarely spelled Hewitt but more often Howat, Howit or Howett in different records. What I'm trying to establish is whether this is the same person as the William Howat/t in the Scots Guards.

Thanks for that. Good to know the discharge date. I just need to find out now if he is the one born Turriff or Old Machar.

Armed Forces / William Howatt, Scots Guards 1870s and 80s

I'm looking for information on a William Howatt, b Aberdeenshire, Scotland circa 1847. He's in the 1871 census with the 2nd Battalion Scots Fusilier Guards at Chelsea Barracks and in the 1881 census at the army camp at Aldershot. I particularly want to find if he was born at Turriff with parents William & Janet and was a tailor before joining the army. Spelling of his surname might vary.

Any other information about his army service gratefully received! Thanks

Banffshire / Re: Banff prison

The tolbooth in a scottish burgh was the council building, court and jail. I think the prison cells were usually used to hold people for a short time until they appeared in court. The cells in the picture, which are probably are still in existence, date at least from the latter part of the 18th century. Next time I manage to get to Banff I'll try to take a look. The building is still council offices.

My 3 ggfather was arrested for forgery and according to the papers at NAS was held at the Banff tolbooth. Somehow he was released from prison before his trial, didn't turn up at Aberdeen High Court to face the charges and was declared an outlaw! He obviously didn't fancy a trip to Australia!

I've written an article about it and it is in the Christmas 2012 issue of Family Tree magazine that's out now!

If you haven't already found them, the trial papers for Alexander Allan's trial are in the National Archives of Scotland ref JC26/1843/144. You can search the catalogue online at www.nas.gov.uk.

Also there are pictures and illustrations of Banff Tolbooth where Alexander Allan may have been held at http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/76723/digital_images/banff+low+street+tolbooth+steeple/
My 3x great grandfather was held there about 10 years earlier!

Thanks for all that, Lisa. I must admit I found the Henrietta/Catharine rather strange but it looks like the henrietta you've found could be the same one. If these are the people I'm looking for it adds yet another interesting twist to what's becoming a very interesting family story!

Thanks for that. If anyone can track down a death record it would be most useful.

US Lookup Requests / William Ewart\Hewett\Hewit\Howat\Howit Buffalo NY lookup please
« on: Sunday 14 October 12 23:34 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for passenger list, naturalization and death record for William Ewart or Hewett. He's resident Buffalo, Erie, New York in 1870 census age 56 with the name Hewett.  Wife in 1870 is Georgiana age 43 also born Scotland. Probably arrived North America 1849-1851.
In different records his name is Hewett, Hewit, Howat, Howit and other variations.
In the 1880 census the family is listed as Ewart and that's the name in the birth records of some of their children while for others it is Hewit

I want to find out if he's my 2x g grandfather, born Turriff, Aberdeenshire, 1814, father's name George Howit, mother's name Mary Robertson, who deserted his wife in Scotland sometime between 1846 and 1851.

Thanks
