Dublin / Re: 1851 Dublin Census query
« on: Monday 26 September 16 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi Loulou330,

The Dublin Heads of Household extract from the 1851 census includes 3 men named Edw. Dillon; one at Upper Abbey St. in St Mary’s Parish; one at Willet Place in St Thomas’s Parish; and one at Garden Lane in the parish of St. Nicholas Without.

Not much to go on, but may be of help someday.

Dublin / Re: Does anyone know what S:C stands for on 1748 St Paul Baptism Register?

Maybe it's the initials of the celebrant?

I think it says 'Tres', latin for Three, as in the Banns were read out the required three times.

Did Sophia or Catherine marry in a RC church?  If so, have you checked that their mother’s maiden name was not recorded in the church registers?

Was Catherine’s husband’s name John? If so, see url for 1892 baptism for Anne Meehan, d/o John Meehan and Catherine Duffy – Sponsors Richard Duffy and Mary Anne Hilforty.  http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/0deb690261700

And marriage, possibly for Sophia’s sister, Mary Anne Duffy, Dublin North, Oct – Dec 1883, vol 2 / page 429.   James Hilfirty cross-matches.

Dublin / Re: Freemans Journal - Dublin.

Hi jeddah– I searched for ‘NOWLAN’ in the Freeman’s Journal for 4th July 1849 and got one hit, which was on page 3.  It seems to relate to a meeting of the ‘South Union Cholera Hospital Committee’ and a ‘Captain Nowlan’ was among the members present.  :(

You might be able to access the online newspaper archive from a local library?

Dathai, I had a very quick look online in the Irish Newspaper Archives for Samuel's accident in 1859 and there is a note in the Freeman's Journal on Friday, December 09, 1859, p. 4:  'Fatal Accident – A man named Samuel O’Neill, aged about 25 years, while engaged at his work in the new church of St Saviour Dominick street, yesterday morning a piece of timber, fell and inflicted great injuries upon him. He was conveyed to Jervis Hospital, where he died in the course of the day.'

Dublin / Re: Child born in South Dublin Union 1921
« on: Wednesday 24 July 13 11:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

There was a birth registered for a Carmel  Corcoran, Dublin South,  Jul - Sep 1921, Volume Number: 2, Page Number: 555.  (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F1MV-WXM).

Francis and Mary's marriage record might also be interesting.

You could try the National Archives, Bishop St. for the records for the South Dublin Union workhouse.

The Dublin Electoral List, 1939, shows a Francis W. and Mary Corcoran living at 4 Charlemont Place, (http://www.dublinheritage.ie/electoral/search.php)

Dublin / Re: Church of Saints Michael and John Records

Hi, these records are probably held in the Dublin Diocesan Archives at Clonliffe Road, Drumcondra,    (archives@dublindiocese.ie).    If not, they should know where they are.

Dublin / Re: Robert Whyte / White Balrothery 1894 - is this the right man?
« on: Sunday 21 July 13 00:31 BST (UK)  »
There is another birth in 1884, registered in ‘Balrothery’, which may also be a possibility.
Birth
Name:  Robert White
Registration Quarter and Year:    Jul - Sep 1884
Registration District: Balrothery
Volume Number:  2
Page Number: 369

But, if you do not have it already, I’d start with ordering the €4 copy of their marriage register from the General Register Office, to confirm the church where they married, as well as the fathers’ names and occupations. Details are:
Marriage
Name: Robert Whyte
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1911
Registration District: Dublin North
Volume: 2
Page Number: 461
It cross-matches with Louise Jeannette Wilmot, so seems likely.
