Essex / Re: Edward Lazell mystery man
« on: Friday 20 December 19 21:05 GMT (UK)  »
Edward Lazell was the son of Samuel Archer, farmer of Wickford (and later Basildon) and Martha Lazell of East Horndon, Essex. Samuel Archer and Martha Lazell married at Bethnal Green, Middlesex on 5 December 1799. Samuel's wife Sarah died in August 1799.  Samuel and Martha had 3 sons (John, William and Edward) and a daughter (Esther) between 1787 and 1799 and 4 children post-marriage. No baptisms found for William, Edward or Esther but John Lazell was baptised 1787 at Basildon, son of Martha Lazell.
The evidence for this comes from Samuel Archer's Will dated 27 March 1813 (he died in 1814) in which he names all of his children. Samuel Archer was a friend of Martha Lazell's father Thomas Lazell and was his executor.
Happy to help further as I understand that several people have been seeking this info for many years.

Returning to the original query about Jesse Selmes - he married Ann Gurr at Wittersham, Kent on 8th December 1811.

I have a lot of Selmes info as I have a One-Name Study for that surname. Quite a bit of info on Frances Selmes and her family too and it's possible that we may have been in touch about that family in the past.

Hello Westy

The Edward Elphick who was buried at Chiddingly in 1818 was a miller and he passed over the business to his two sons Thomas and Richard in 1812, per an article in the Sussex Advertiser newspaper 26 October 1812. The Death Duties Register shows his executor was Thomas Elphick.

The Edward Elphick who married Hannah Bovis at Rye in 1759 was, per the marriage register transcript, a seaman, and a sojourner itp (a temporary resident in this parish). It appears he is the Edward bap Willingdon 1734 and looks unlikely that he is the miller Edward, who I think came from Arlington/Hellingly.

Hello Westy

Anc's not to blame - the data in this instance comes from the LDS and their British Isles Vital Records Index. It comes up as Rye on FamilySearch too.

Hello Westy

John Elfick, son of Edward and Hannah, was baptised at Salehurst, Sussex on 6 April 1760.

For some reason Ancestry has the baptism as taking place at Rye, Sussex. I've had experience of this in my own families from Salehurst where baptisms which actually took place in Salehurst are appearing in Ancestry's England and Wales Christening Index and England Select Births and Christenings as happening at Rye. There are no Elphick/Elfick baptisms at Rye in the period 1747 -1773.

Sussex / Re: what became of Myrtle Amelia Sharp bap 1880 Easebourne

Hello Westy

The Myrtle Sharp who was admitted to Lewisham Workhouse on 23 October 1896, age 19 b1877 was  discharged on 25 Nov 1896 to a Women's Home. She is almost certainly the Myrtle Sharp who gave birth to a daughter Myrtle Louisa Sharp ( birth was registered in March q 1897, mother's maiden name Sharp) baptised at St Dunstan & All Saints church, Stepney on 29 May 1897. Myrtle was shown in the bap register as a singlewoman of 31 Arbour Square, Stepney. Myrtle Louisa Sharp's death was registered in the September q 1897.

I think it is still worth considering this Myrtle Sharp as being 'your' Myrtle. There are no other birth registrations for a Myrtle Sharp(e) in the period 1870 -1890 apart from Myrtle Amelia Sharp 1878.
Her brother John moved away from Sussex so it's quite possible she went with him.

It is odd how Myrtle just disappears without trace. I've tried lots of lateral thinking but have not been able to track her down. She remains on the 'wanted list'!

Hello Westy

Just to help with eliminating the Myrtle Nutter who appears in the 1939 Register living at Hammersmith with William Nutter, taxi driver b1871 - she was Myrtle Ann Riches born 20 October 1878 at Battersea (dob from her baptism). She was actually William's sister-in-law (his wife was Emily Jane Riches b1872 ), although they appear to have been a couple post 1911. At 1911 Myrtle was living with a William Wright as his wife.

No sign of Myrtle Amelia Sharp but at least that's Myrtle Nutter out of the running!

Sussex / Re: death/burial of George Carrick
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 14:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello Westy

George Carrick age 52 buried in 1822 at St Peter and St Paul, Tonbridge, Kent and in the same grave wife Mary Carrick age 72, buried 1843. This info from a headstone via gravephotos website. There's a death reg for Mary Carrick in the Camberwell, Surrey disrict June quarter (GRO Index shows age 73) so that could be her. Her son William lived in Surrey so she may have been living with him.

Best wishes
