Hi Jim
I have only just 'discovered' this site. I can give some details of the Beveridge and Todd families.
The William Tod(d) Beveridge who went to Australia is my paternal great-grandfather. I tried to attach a couple of extensive Word documents to this message on the BEVERIDGE-TODD and BEVERIDGE-DALTON families, but got an 'error' message because they were not in an acceptable format. I am no computer geek, so, short of giving you my e-mail address, I don't know how I can pass them to you. Any thoughts on how I get around this difficulty?
I can confirm that Catherine Matilda Todd's father, William Todd, was indeed in the military: he served almost 29 years (3 Nov 1787 to 30 April 1816) in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Artillery, spending the duration of his service at Halifax in present-day Nova Scotia. I have his two-page discharge certificate if you would like to see it. His 'retirement benefit' was a pension at the rate of 1 shilling and 7 pence per day, which, for the time, was not as bad as it might seem at our remove. "St John, Lower America" (present-day New Brunswick), which his daughter Catherine gave as her place of birth in a Census, is just across the Bay of Fundy from Nova Scotia.
My daughter had the opportunity a few years ago (about 2007) to visit Kirkcaldy. We had prepared beforehand for her to gain access to the Pathhead Feuars Graveyard and also did as much research as possible on the location of the grave. The key-holder who gave her access said she should not be too upset if she did not find the family grave because not many headstones had survived, and many of those which had were illegible. But, after orienting herself, she walked straight to it; she said the fellow's jaw nearly hit the ground!! I have a photo somewhere of her beside the headstone, which is still legible; if I can find the 'safe place' I put it in I will send it - if you are interested.
I am tied up with other things at the moment which are occupying my time, but wanted to get this off to you.
Kindest regards
Bob Beveridge
