Hi all,

I think I'll have to look at this tomorrow as its getting a little too complicated for this time of night in New Zealand haha

But I would like to add that I believe Richard and Robert NICHOLLS/NICKOLLS to be the sons of Thomas NICHOLLS/NICKOLLS and Elizabeth (Betty) WELLS. And Betty WELLS to be the daughter of Richard WELLS & Ann MARCH.

And Robert NICHOLLS/NICKOLLS's first wife Mary MERCER/MESSER to be the daughter of John MERCER/MESSER & Elizabeth (Betty) SMITH.

I have 22 pages of a NICHOLS descendency I received in 2001-2002 I received from a gentleman called Gordon Keith Hazell who never replied to my follow up emails. But I just see from a google search that Tree knows Gordon??

Ta Steve

Hello Sue,

Thanks, that is of immense help! You been able to confirm some info I had been given a decade ago but with no sources available.

The Robert and Elizabeth NICHOLS you mentioned appears to be Williams brother and his family. I'd hope that they might show the following children in the Duns Tew PRs?

Robert married to unknown 28 Dec 1798 (wife #1)
Caralinah Nichols bap 24 Nov 1799
Maria Nichols bap 28 Oct 1804
Mary Ann Nichols bap 25 Jan 1807

Robert married to Elizabeth Wells 22 Apr 1811 (wife #2)
Elizabeth Nichols bap 05 Feb 1812
Emma Nichols bap 28 Nov 1813
Caleb Nichols bap 12 Apr 1816
Joshua Nichols #1 bap 21 Jun 1818 bur 11 Apr 1819
Eliza Nichols bap 20 Sep 1821
Hannah Nichols bap 20 Sep 1821
Joshua Nichols #2 bap 18 Aug 1824
Sophia Nichols bap 18 Sep 1828
Edwin Henry Nichols bap 2 Oct 1831 bur 04 Apr 1832

Tree,

So it seems that the Nichols family were at the White Horse from 1825 with William through to Margaret in 1854, then your John Canning in 1855, then John Nichols from at least 1861-1881 (with daughter Ellen a barmaid in 1861). Does anyone know of any other resources or references around the history of the White Horse? :)

Most appreciated, Steve

Hi everyone, I spent the afternoon looking through all the info that you have so kindly provided and have a wee look around for Margaret Nichols.

I did find her in 1841/1851 as a Publican/Innkeeper in Duns Tew, presumably following on from her deceased husband William (Innkeeper in 1838) at the White Horse as I don't believe there were any other establishments. Census info helps to flesh out some of her children and their spouses which is nice. By 1861 (aged 74) she is living by herself with a pauper lodger and next door is a similarly aged widow named Elisabeth Nichols. That now gives me another avenue to look down. Cant find her in 1871 yet although I believe she dies in 1876.

All very exciting!

Hi Sue, wow thanks for that.

I'm seeing some very strong connections to the SIMPKINS & CANNINGS. That's prob to be expected in such a small village at that time?

Cheers Steve

BTW Tree, was the 1841 census info you shared transcribed or is it the original image? I believe that the birth dates for John & Susanna NICHOLS should be 1810 as opposed to 1816. Very easy for a '0' to look like a '6'.

Thanks Steve

Hi everyone, this is very interesting thank you!

Trees, some of my old (unconfirmed) info on the NICHOLS line in Duns Tew looks a bit like this. I havent added it in to my tree as I wasnt sure with its sources. Maybe some other readers will be able to comment on it?

Hi, I am just trying to locate my source for the 'Vicarage House' detail in the 1861 census as my actual census image doesn't show that. It may have been a red herring on my behalf! I also see that I actually did have some of the 1841 census info but not of the household so that's been very useful thanks.

I had been given some information many years ago but was never able to verify the persons research so cautiously I never added it in to my tree, but looking back at it I see that it does seem to tie in with what you are telling me. You can see that info at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jazsaxman3&id=I14

That gives my Susanna's father as John Frederic SIMKINS b.~1873, North Ashton. It also shows a Margaret NICHOLS and a Robert NICHOLS. I'll keep looking for its source but lost many emails a decade ago with a computer crash.

If you want to check out my tree its at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jazsaxman&id=I346

Cheers Steve

Hello, thanks very much for that! It certainly looks like the right household in 1841 with Mary appearing to be Susanna's mother. I wonder if your line will tie in through Richard SIMKINS?

I had a look at your website, found the below entry and was wondering if you had any extra info? I'm particularly interested as it seems to tie in the NICHOLS name at the White Horse.

The White Horse, Duns Tew.
The only Inn at Duns Tew is the 17 century coaching inn ‘The White Horse’ which is still open and has retained its flag stone floors and low beams. This was possibly the one kept by John CANNING [9669] in 1855. when he appears as an Inn keeper on his son’s marriage certificate but the Post Office Directory for 1854 has him as a shop keeper and Mrs Margaret Nichols at the White Horse.

Cheers Steve
