can anyone take a photo of a headstone if it exists at Fawkner cemetery? Even a photo of the dirt plot if that is the case.  If no headstone I will get one done.
COE-R  grave 158491 Harriett Spark with her son Albert Edward Spark and granddaughter Judith POWELL>  Harriett was buried may 1944, Albert 1936. Any help appreciated. I am in Country Victoria and do not get to Melbourne much.

i hope it will otherwise back to square one.  Yes I found this John with Maggie and two step children and stated they had been married 4 years. Unfortunately can not locate any marriage between them around 1907 and maybe his first wife Mary was still alive.

Maggie's first husband died in 1898/1899 so she was a widow in 1901. I did find a John Kirkland as a boarder aged 40 in 1901 in Liverpool and noted as a Merchantile Clerk.  this matches in with known census records when he was living with his parents in 1891 and his marriage certificate in 1884.

So only leaves Mary Kirkland nee Campbell missing after 1891.

thank you

thank you for that. Interesting to see John spark Kirkland at his Uncle's house. I suppose his grandparents died in 1906 so I assume then he didnt have anywhere to live.

re Mary Jane kirkland - unfortunately it is not my Mary Kirkland nee campbell. Sounded great but she was born in 1865 - so in 1912 would have been 47 and not 23.

So I will have to continue to look for her. She was found in 1891 census but lost after that. Her son John spark Kirkland said she was deceased by 1913. Whether she was or not I do not know. It is possible she took up with someone else after 1891 and thereby changed names.  I cant seem to find a relevant Mary kirkland born in 1865 in Greenock dying anywhere after 1891 and before 1913.

it seems possible that her husband took up with another person in 1907 and was found living in England in 1901 and 1911.  I havent verified that this is him yet but I will find out soon. (death certificate to come to show hopefully the right parents) .
So mary is still a mystery. Her father was a Donald Campbell and an Annie McNaughton (noted as maiden name Campbell?) both deceased by 1884.
cheers

I can tell you the Shaftesbury Hotel in Stirling St was demolished in about 1990.

I have photos from it in the 1950s 1980s and of course the ones on line for 1930s.

My ancestor Thomas Alfred Shafto built the hotel
Any more info just ask.

I need help locating my John Kirkland in Scotland.
He and his wife seem to have disappeared after 1891.
my John Kirkland was born in 1861 in Govan Lanarkshire to John Kirkland and Marion Spark
He married Mary Campbell in 1884 in Greenock, Renfrewshire.
They had one son John Spark(e) Kirkland in 1888 in Govan Lanark Scotland.
John was with his son John at his parents place on the 1891 census.
Mary was a domestic servant at her employers house also in Lanark.
They can not be found on the 1901 census.
John Spark Kirkland was found still living with his grandparents on this census and was the informant on the death of both grandparents who died in 1906.
In 1913 when John spark Kirkland married he said his parents were both deceased. I havent been able to find a correct death for either John Kirkland (1861) or Mary Kirkland (nee Campbell) (1865) anywhere. HELP anyone who can locate their deaths or on any census.

Hi there all. I realise these posts were from 2008 - but I can tell you the Shaftesbury hotel definitely is not there and yes there is a multi storied car park built there. it was a vacant site for some time prior.

It was built by Thomas Alfred Shafto - an ancestor of mine in about 1904. He then built the shaftesbury Theatre next to it which in the 1960's had a car park built on that site. That was flattened back in the 1990's.
If any one wants a history of the building they can contact me.

it became the Luor, tivoli, a roller skate rink, Ballroom etc.
Cheers
