Meath / Re: Carolan family
« on: Saturday 25 May 13 23:26 BST (UK)  »
I realize that Meath is in Northern Ireland, I should have clarified that these families ended up in Meath after being dispossessed of their land in N. Ireland. Most had come from NI and moved out from there, settling in and around Dublin. Was getting ahead of myself while typing.

.....if they descend from the family from Meath, Ireland. Both of my grandparents had Carolan relatives from that specific area of Northern Ireland
....

Co. Meath is not part of Northern Ireland, it's in the east in the province of Leinster next to Dublin, and has a small coastline with the Irish Sea.

I was researching via Goolge today and found a link to a Cullen family, also related to the Carolans, who landed in Canada. It might be worth checking out the site:

Thank you for the reply. While I haven't traced the Carolans on my tree to Mayo, Ancestry.com does have a members connect area that makes suggestions for possible family tree matches, and one family on there is from Mayo.

It looks like their family is John Carolan and Mary Reilly, and from what I can see, they had a son John Carolan (b. 1837) married to Mary Walsh, and they lived in Crossmolina, Co, Mayo. It may help to check this family out. I don't think they are connected to mine, but it's worth sharing the info if it can help you. Who knows, maybe the townland can help you narrow down your search?

There also a ton of other Carolan families in Westmeath, Louth and outside of Belfast. I believe these are connected to my own family.

The Carolans related to my own family were born in Moynalty, Meath, and ended up in Worcester, Massachusetts, Providence, Rhode Island, and Newark, NJ.

If it is Carolan family information you are looking for, I can point you in the direction if they descend from the family from Meath, Ireland. Both of my grandparents had Carolan relatives from that specific area of Northern Ireland, and I have added some of their genealogy to my tree on Ancestry.com.

I have more than a dozen Carolan family members, starting with John Carolan and Catherine Mulvany (b. 1840s) and including such surnames as Brown, McMahon, Cully and Fitzsimons. I also have Carolan connections into my tree who can probably provide some additional details.

Message me if your family is related.

Cavan / Re: Look-up: Patrick Lynch, Coragloon, Mullagh, Cavan Abt. 1870

I completed the form with all the information I had - baptism date, birthdate (+/- a few years), parish, parent's names, associated townland - essentially everything I know about her.

The only think I can think of is that my great grandma, Mary McMahon, wasn't born in Moynalty, Meath, merely baptized there? Perhaps she was born in Dublin, as were a few of her 19 siblings? Also, her baptism records show her name as MacMahon, while her dad, Laurence, used Mahon before switching to McMahon around 1900.

I know they lived at Carrigagh in Moynalty (later Trohanny), Meath since I commissioned a general report on my family several months ago that stated such. Her parents, Laurence and Bridget Dolan, were born to men named James, and they grew up next to each other at Carrigagh. Laurence lied about his birthdate when marrying Bridget, listing his birthdate as 1845, when he was actually born around 1830.

It doesn't surprise me that I can't find their records, as my grandmother's  records are also missing (she was born Kathleen Lynch in 13 Mar 1907). It's very frustrating.

So I order the documents, but it came back that they have no record of my great grandma, Mary MacMahon/McMahon? I know she was baptized in Moynalty, Meath on 17 April 1869, but apparently, this wasn't when or where she was born. I have copies of her baptism record from the Irish History Foundation site, but I need to figure out where she was born in order to get her certificate. Guess it's back to the drawing board!

Thank you for your reply. I viewed their marriage record from the www.rootsireland.re website several months ago, but it it is missing some info. However, it shows that Patrick Lynch and Mary MacMahon were married on 30 Aug 1893, in Moynalty, Co. Meath. What it doesn't show is their fathers' names, witness info and townland.

I know from family records that Mary's family was living at Carrigagh (Curraha) in Meath, but they ended up moving to where some of Patrick's family lived in Cavan (or so I have been told), settling at Corragloon(e), Crossbane.  I was hoping to discover the ancestral home of the Lynches, rather than where they settled in the mid-1800s, but that may be impossible due to the lack of records. Family rumor has it that they descended from a Colla line and possibly the Stuarts (but it's unconfirmed and my grandma would never talk about it)?

I never heard anything about Peter living in Donegal, but it looks like Patrick and Peter's brothers were also living there too around 1901. However, Peter lists on the census records that he was born in Cavan, and his wife was born in Antrim.  Family lore states that part of his family fled Cavan in order to escape prosecution for stealing horses and cattle. My understanding is that they snuck back into Cavan and set up house without the authorities (British) knowing.

To obtain an official copy of their marriage and birth records, where can I purchase one? I am assuming these records would have more information than what was on the records I downloaded from IFHF?

Thank you again.

Cavan / Look-up: Patrick Lynch, Coragloon, Mullagh, Cavan Abt. 1870
« on: Monday 14 January 13 00:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Patrick Lynch of Coragloon, Mullagh, Cavan. He was born around 1870, and later married Mary McMahon (born to Laurence McMahon and Bridget Dolan) of Carrigagh, Moynalty, Meath, in 1893. However, I am trying to find out who Patrick's parents were, where he was born and in what year?

Family lore states that his dad was also named Patrick, and that he was a horse rustler in Cavan, but I am not sure who the younger Patrick's mother was? The families ancestral home in Cavan was confiscated by British during Cromwells time, but we don't have a townland name. I know my g grandpa had a brother, Hugh, and possibly another brother named Peter (who is listed in the 1911 census for Drumgolan, Cavan), but I am unable to confirm these details. They are also said to have had to sneak back into Cavan since they were notorious horse thieves.

Any help you could provide is greatly appreciated, as it would really help my family to trace the Lynch family beyond 1860. We have the history from 1870 to present, but the past eludes us.

Many thanks.
