Occupation Interests / Show Card Finisher
« on: Wednesday 24 September 14 12:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on the above occupation. It appears on the census in 1911 for my relation Mary Ann Martin. The only links to Cards I can find appear to be to do with weaving or Mills but this is in Lambeth and I am not aware of a large weaving community there.

Could it be something to do with advertising for shops etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for some advice.

I am currently using Family Tree Maker 2005 to store my tree. Since I have moved to Windows 8 I can no longer export a PDF, the program keeps shutting down.

I have been planning to upgrade anyway and was wondering if I should upgrade to FTM 2014 or try another program assuming I can export without problems given the old version of my program.

I also have a question about the security of data on websites. I would like to share my tree with some family members and many genealogy sites and software offer the ability to create a website.

Can anybody tell me if this can be done where the only access to the site will be family members I choose. I do not want this information to go to a wider audience.

Any help will be much appreciated.

The Lighter Side / Re: BBC TV "WDYTYA?" Series 10 Episode 9 John Barnes
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 23:26 BST (UK)  »
I think for a lot of people this programme was instrumental in introducing people to genealogy in the first place.

In earlier series it needed to put all of the various steps required to trace a family tree into the programme.

I believe that in many cases they now feel that this has been established so many times that they can now show the results without the methodology of getting there. If you look at the BBC page for WDYTYA the links are to Family History rather than genealogy and it is classified within the Genre of Factual > Life Stories and by Format : Documentaries.

I know a lot of people have complained about this series on these boards but would be interested if any one has complained to the BBC and if so what the responce has been.

Does anyone know if the shows makers are aware of these boards or their thoughts on the complaints.

I was not a particular fond of tonight's episode either but that was only because I found the pace slow and the subject not that interesting but as a whole I have liked this series maybe because I no longer expect it to try and teach me how to do things and can just enjoy the programme.

Family History Beginners Board / Census Property Names

I have just solved a little problem which brought up something I had not thought off. Just in case it helps anyone else am posting it here.

My sister is doing some work in her house which is Victorian and was wondering who had lived there before so asked me to search the census. When I looked for the address I could not find it, in fact I could not find the road.

She had the original deeds which shows the address and it was still as it was now so the name of the road had not changed.

It was only when she gave me some more details from the document that it was solved. When the house was built it was given a name as were all of the others in the street.

All of the houses on the street were recorded under the house names not the street name. I was then able to find what I wanted.

Hope this helps someone else.

Thank you all for your replies.

I have tried using the free Ancestry but so far no luck but will keep trying.

mshrmh I take your point and is one I will continue to pursue.

David- Below is a summary of what I am trying to find and the info I know and have tried so far.

I am looking for the family of Robert Stell born 15th May 1867.

In 1891 he is living with his new wife Rose (nee Kirby) born 1869 and his brother in law George in Watson’s Walk, St Albans. They married in the 1st Quarter of 1891 in St Albans.

By 1901 the family has moved to Milton Road, Hendon in Middlesex. They have two daughters Rose born 1892 and May born 1900.

I believe that I have him back in St Albans in 1911 living with a Jessie Frosdyke born 1887 and a daughter of the same name. Jessie is shown as single and a housekeeper. I do not know if the daughter is his or if there is anything going on but Jessie Snr is shown as being born in St Johns Wood which is not far from Hendon.

My problem is I can find no record on the 1911 census for either Rose Snr or Jnr or for May.

I have looked under Stell, Steel and Still and various other variations along with her maiden name Kirby.

The daughter Rose would have been old enough to have married and moved away but May would only be 11 and should be with one of the parents.

I cannot locate a death entry for any of them. I have also searched passenger lists and can not find them leaving the country.

Many Thanks
