I have an ancestor John Andrew Lewis born 1850 in Rhayader, Wales,a tailor (with I think a bottle problem) :'(  and from his photograph extremely good looking  (He had lady problems too I think)  ::)
Well, he shows nicely on the 51 to 81 census (81 in Rhayader, tailor out of employ) An old letter sent to the USA by his father indicates that he emigrated there in 1873 ( possibly with a girl named Mary?...on passenger list) (didn't get seasick) but had to have returned to be in Rhayader, Wales in 1881.

Family word of mouth indicates that he was a tailor/cutter for Co-Op Cutters,Balloon Street, Manchester and indeed there is a tailor of the right name lodging in Balloon St in 1891.However I have no proof that it is him. He married first in 1869 in Wales.
That marriage "fell apart" because the wife had two children but I think John suspected that he was not the father of either one.The naming of the second child is a story in itself. The wife died in 1876.He took up with one Hannah James (born BRE 1850) in the same year (in Manchester) and produced two children both born in Beswick.I have tracked them all down nicely. (Hannah at last count had 8 (count 'em) out of wedlock. She never married anyone. ::)

John Andrew then marries Charlotte Barker (a Catholic girl?) 26 Dec 1882, her father being Henry, at St Patrick's,Livesey Street,Manchester.(Possibly neither family was happy about it?) One child I have found was Charles Henry born in Ancoats 1883 died the next year, buried St Phillip's. The Catholic Registers were not available at Bow Lane,Preston 20 years ago for me.There may be more children in Catholic Register baptisms/burials that I have not found.
I think that marriage failed too since this is where I lose both of them.I have found a possibility or two for both, separately in 1891/1901 but very iffy.

I really would like to find the death of John and Charlotte. He never used his middle name of Andrew unfortunately!
Is anyone related? or who perhaps can help? Anyone know about Co-Op Cutters? I have walked down Balloon Street years ago (by accident, mind the trams) and there was still a big painted sign on the brickwork that said Co-Op stores or something.
Any help would be appreciated. If anyone is related they are quite welcome to all info I have on the lad.
Thank you....Roger Lewis
(Canada) presently in Penang.

Brilliant find!! Yes, I remember now...the troop arrivals are on separate lists at TNA.They go by Regiment as most of the Army stuff does. They are known as Embarkation/Disembarkation lists. WO/25 series I think. They can be magic if looking for Army people.Boer War is only a guess though. He may have been posted to Ireland or somewhere.

Still wouldn't have believed it if I had not read it in print.
I have great respect for TNA.
Will save the website. You know how many people out there will not believe it.  ;D ;D
Thanks for all the help.

Yes, what you say is true and yes mum probably did die.I have seen the other Parker census.Sister Flo was a witness at his marriage in 1905 so that all holds water so to speak.
How could he move up though from general labourer in 1891 to a Publisher's Manager in 1911.
The last job would need a fair bit of education I would think...different social caste too??
That is why I thought perhaps he may have had a bit of education in the Army (20 years?) or wherever he was in 1901.I have checked the incoming UK passenger lists and there are a couple of possibilities but no way of knowing for sure.Nothing from S Africa (Boer War) though.Mostly all from USA.

But to reply to KGerrard....Yes...I understand what you are saying.I can call myself Sambulthrance if I want to or anything else using words. That does not make it my legal name though...otherwise there is no point in having birth certificates. One either has a legal name or one does not.Which is it?
Anything other than the name on a birth certificate is not your real name.(Actors and Actresses do it all the time)I agree one can call themselves anything they wish using words but it is still not their legal name.If you give someone a different name than on your birth certificate when asked, then you are telling a lie for whatever reason.Face it.It is known as a lie!...even today.Proof of identity also has nothing to do with the question either.
In the end I am not really interested in what everyone "thinks" or "says" about this. What I really would like is to know what the Law said about it in 1895.(Not what it doesn't say)I simply don't know.

You have a better eye than me....I looked also for a death and missed it.
To be honest I don't really know the first name of this man is James for sure.He was said in the Fam Bible to have been surnamed Jones. It doesn't get much worse than that in S Wales does it!! :'(
The next plan is to try the PRs for both Llandysul and Pontarddulais.Even there it will be a bit of a slog because of an unknown oow birth and between 1871 and 1881.....one parent Harris and the other said to be Jones!
The age of 77 at death in 1955 is also a bit worrying. Was that his real age after all?
That would tend to bode well for being underage if he joined the Army.He would then also be underage at marriage in 1895.Sounds a bit more like the lad's real life modus operandi.
Does Pontarddulais fall under the Swansea Reg Dist?

Oh dear....Ray you didn't go far enough to the right on the 1881 ......James Harris age 6 is an imbecile!!!
Of course that may have been part of the lad's problems.
Back to the drawing board perhaps??
