Armed Forces / Difference between corporal & seargent
« on: Thursday 30 August 12 09:51 BST (UK)  »
Just discovered my great grandfather was both a corporal and a seargent in world war one.
I was just wondering if anyone knew the roles of the two? And was it usual to be both within an army career?

I know this may be a little ignorant of me but what was the difference between a corporal and a seargent's role?
It seems my great grandad was both

I've just looked these up - very helpful thank you.
I'm thinking the william w must be him because as you say there probably wouldn't be another one.
If they lived in Essex do you think they could be fighting for hertfordshire regiment?
I think I've also found Thomas:

Medal card of Fidgeon, Thomas

And my great grandfather:

If I went down to the national archives at KEW do you think I could view these personally?

Two of my great grandfather's brothers would have been 26 and 17 when world war one began but I can't find either of them in the world war one records archive.
I can find my great grandad though.
I wondered if because one of his brothers was a vanman/driver on 1911 census that he may have been a reserved occupation.
The other was only a shop assistant so I assume he would have had to join up.

Anyone help me solve this?
I know its not my immediate relation but I still like to know  :)

Family History Beginners Board / General domestic/domestic servant

Three of my ancestors (girls) were domestic servants/general domestics on the 1911 census.
One was a live-in domestic with a 60+ year old couple in what I suppose would be a middle class house.
The other two are registered on the census as living at home with parents and siblings. However still as domestics. Is this usual? I thought most servants had to live in with families employing them?

Thanks so much for this!
I must have missed that entirely, she wasnt on 1901 census so must have moved out when she was 18/19

Traced my family on the 1911 census - there is a mother, father and 4 children still living at home.
My great grandfather (one of the siblings) is at that time registered on the census but elsewhere - he was in the army full time at this point and his sister Kate is a servant living in another house.

My query is this: on the main household census it asks how many children still living and how many born alive - 7 has been filled in but there are only 6 that I can count. I went back onto the 1901 census to check and henry and kate are living there still with the other 4 siblings.
Do you think this was a genuine mistake as maths wasn't a strong point then probably?
Or is there something else going on?

Family History Beginners Board / Fidgeon/Waskett search
« on: Saturday 25 August 12 18:01 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the family on my father's side with the surname of Fidgeon - living in the Essex area and have been there as far as I can tell for a while.

I have got as far back as 1803 - Israel Fidgeon - married to a Mariah Wombwell - 4 children - one of which, James was my great great great grandfather.
His son Thomas was my great x 2 grandfather and his son Henry James was my great grandfather, Henry's siblings were: William Walter, Florence Sarah, Eliza Mariah and Thomas Frederick

There are many families by the name of Fidgeon living in Essex at this time, they all seem to have come from the same line - Israel being the head. Of course he was also born at some time and I can't find his roots.

His son Israel was also a beer house keeper in Rayleigh - of a well-known pub at the time the elephant and castle (now does not exist) married to Emily

If anyone has any info or may be a distant relative, I'd love to hear from you!

I'm also researching my mother's side which is waskett - William specifically- living in East London - Stratford and East Ham area haven't got much of a lead at the moment but if anyone could help I would be grateful
