Family History Beginners Board / Abraham Bines - Criminal Record?
« on: Monday 26 May 14 23:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys,

Just after some advice/help with my 2nd great grandfather. He was born Abraham Bines in 1866 in Cardiff. He married a Mary Rees in 1890 & had 3 children - Elizabeth, William & Sarah (My great grandmother). Mary passed away in 1908 & he married a Rachel Donovan in 1917 & was stepfather to John Donovan. Whilst I've been looking into his past, I found out he served time in the military under the 1st Batallion Royal Welsh (regimental number 7561, in the second Boer War)
Whilst reading over his enlistment I noticed that next to the question "Have you ever been sentenced to imprisonment by the Civil Power?" The initial answer was "Yes once for" but then scribbled it out and replaced with "No"

Now I'm curious as to whether he was sentenced & what this crime was for? I've tried searching around the Ancestry site for answers but found nothing. I've also noticed that Abraham couldn't read or write, as he put his mark on the document instead of signing - so could it be possible he got into trouble but was never actually imprisoned?

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Great Grandfather -Charles Edward King

I've got the marriage certificate of Charles & Rosanna, who my father knew was his grandmother. So that confirmed that Charles' father was called Thomas.
The census records I've been able to find of Charles have had his birthplace as being Bath, Somerset. So I'm hoping if I purchase the birth certificate that I've found for him (5c, 674), then it will show Thomas as his father & also provide his mother's name.

Other than that, I'm completely lost as to find out any more about this man. :(

I've just been able to find a record for a Charles King born in 1874 in Somerset which is where I think he actually was born - so I think I'm going to look at getting a copy of that birth certificate.
Annoyingly he isn't registered as Charles Edward.

Is there anything I'd be able to do to verify it's the correct certificate before I purchase it? Or would it be a case of buy the certificate and hope it lists Thomas as the father?

Does the ancestry site allow to search by Census references? If so, how?

Hi,

On the marriage certificate to Rosanna Lewis, Thomas King is listed as deceased in 1918 and his occupation was that of an Ostler. I will look into the records you've found to see what I can find that matches up.
 Thank you :)

Hi guys,
I've posted asking for help with my great grandfather before and you guys were amazing and helping me find out more about him & he is still causing me trouble.

His name was Charles Edward King, born in 1875 in Bath, according to Census records. He married twice, once to a Violet King (maiden name unknown) who died in 1915 & then again to a Rosanna Lewis (she was a widow, née Roper) in 1918 in Merthyr Tydfil. I've bought the marriage certificate for them which arrived this morning, and listed Charles' father as being named Thomas King who was deceased in 1918, but now I'm having trouble in finding out any more info about this branch of the tree, which is frustrating since I have the same surname.

I've been searching Census records for 1881 & 1891 based of this but I'm struggling since I'm unsure as to when Thomas died, who he was married to & whether there were any other children. I've tried searching for Birth records to try and find a birth certificate, so I can at least find out his Mother's name, but it's coming up a blank. I've not had any trouble like this with any other branches of the tree, especially this close to the bottom so any advice from you guys would be much appreciated.

Also any tips or guidance as to where I'm going wrong when conducting searches would also be appreciated.

I've just searched on RootsIreland and found a Baptism record in Cork for a Margaret Maguire in 1836.
are there any other sites i'm able to use to try and glean some more information from this, without having to pay for 25 credits?
