Hello again,

I will keep searching and will of course let you know if a link is established with Norfolk. I appreciate that most families were extremely large back then, however the research company (who are a large company of 40 yrs) have told me that they haven't ever traced a family as large as this one, also the family seems to breed predominantly males generation after generation...............

Regards,

Simon Nelson

HI Simon

If you find a connection with Norfolk, contact a local researcher, they are more likely to have been using the local records for longer than national firms. The quote you give fills me with concerns as every family has lots of history and, if you go into it, 99% of families are massive. Good luck with your research.

Hello all,

I have loads of information on this please email directly to simon.nelson7@ntlworld.com and I can email the tree over if you like.

Thanks Simon Nelson

My great grandfather on my mother's side was Robert Nelson of Sheriff Hutton, born 1860.
His father was Robert Nelson of Terrington, born 1823. He married Maria Robinson of Knapton in 1844.

Now I am lacking a bit more info......
Robert was the son of George Nelson (no birth or death dates yet) and he married Nanny Newlove of Terrington, born 1800.
Nanny Newlove's father was William Newlove.
Does anybody have any info on the following.........?
Who were the parents of Maria Robinson born 1826? That would open up another branch of the tree!
What year was George Nelson born and died in? Where was he and Nanny married?
Any info on William Newlove and who he married?

Using Familysearch, Findmypast, Freebmd and Google I have now drawn a blank......
Has anybody else done any research into any of these families?

Hello,

My name is Simon Nelson of Sherriff Hutton (although I currently live in the south). I have been tracing my family tree professionaly for some time now and have stacks of information that will interest you.

Your correct the Nelson family was based in Ripon at around 1750, but have a huge family from Sherriff Hutton, Terrington, and other surrounding villages around Malton and York.

The name Nelson was first registered in England in circa 1240 at Wakefield, Yorkshire and apparently is a Viking term meaning "Son of Nel"

Please email me directly on simon.nelson7@ntlworls.com if you require more information and I will email you a copy of the tree if you like.

Thanks Simon Nelson

Thats ok,still useful ! :)

Hello,

I can certainly help you with the Nelsons as they are all in my family tree. I have traced the Nelson tree for a while and have stacks of information, this research is still ongoing at the moment.

I do not however have any information on the bell family although Martha is listed in the tree as marrying a Nelson.

If your interested email me directly to simon.nelson7@ntlworld.com

Thanks Simon Nelson

Hi all.....I am researching my grandma's family ancestry and have now got stuck.

She is Alice Nelson, born Barmby Moor near Pocklington in 1893.
Her father was Robert Nelson (b. 1860 Sheriff Hutton) who married Martha Bell (christened 28/1/1863 Northallerton) in 1886 in Skelton on Ure.

Robert Nelson's father was also Robert Nelson (b.1822 Terrington) who married Maria Robinson (b. 1826 Knapton) in the York District in 1844.

However I cannot find out any more info on who their parents were as there are too many permutations! Familysearch.org had proved very useful but any further help would be much appreciated.

I have established that Martha Bell's mother was Mary Bell, but I have no further info on her, her husband, where born, married etc. can anybody help? Have I got my info correct?

Hello. My name is Simon nelson, my family are based in York and the surrounding villages and have been for nearly 300 years. It is a huge family with lots of history. I am currently tracing my descendants through a professional company who have quoted " they have never traced a family so large" I am currently back to the year 1750 where the Nelson family was based in Ripon, Yorkshire. The Nelson name was first recorded in England in circa 1240 where it was logged in Wakefield, Yorkshire. The name Nelson apparently is a Viking name and means "Son of Nel" (apparently Nel was a Viking).

Although it sounds like your quite a way from Yorkshire it would be interesting maybe to share any information that we have with a view to establishing a link.

Look forward to hearing from you  Simon Nelson

My family seems to trace back to a Nelson family at Swaffham in Norfolk & I wondered if there was some connection to Horatio Nelson of Trafalgar fame.  The furthest back I can get is to Richard Nelson (born 1703 Swaffham) who married Helena brown (born 1711).  Their child was William Nelson born 1740 Swaffham, who married Elizabeth Burgill born 1750.

From there the line goes down to William Burgill Nelson born 1772 and his son Robert Nelson born 1810.

I'm guessing that my family links into Nelson's father or grandfathers family somewhere.  Is there a wider family tree for the Nelsons so that i can see where?
