Thank you so much for all this useful information. I will followup the leads given - and yes, he did move to Surrey, in about 1845, and then to Greenwich.

I am trying to trace the marriage record of Isaac Sallis and Mary Ann Wyatt. Their first child, Joseph, was born in Marlborough in 1827 but I can't find a marriage record. Their second child, Ellen, was born there in 1834. I am also trying to find out what happened in the intervening period - I have found a reference to an Isaac Sallis 'detained upon orders' in Devizes Jail in 1830. Does anyone have any ideas about how I might find out more about why Isaac had been 'detained' at this time?

This is interesting although the 'unmarried' listing is worrying. And I'm not much further forward in finding a birth record - would the records be held in the Gloucester Record Office?

He is shown as a commercial traveller on the daughter Maria's birth certificate in 1837, and on the daughter Elizabeth's marriage certificate in 1859 he is shown as a clothier. Wife Elizabeth is a widow in 1861, and a fundholder, so I assume there was a little bit of money.

Yes I have the four children in Portishead in the 1841 census but no parents, and I have no date information for Samuel at all - I know he exists only from a marriage certificate for his eldest daughter and the birth certificate of his youngest child.

I am having trouble tracing records for Samuel and Elizabeth Harrison. Elizabeth, nee Smith, is shown in census records as being born in Woodchester in about 1811. She had four children, all living with her in Cheltenham in 1851 - no sign of Samuel, although she is shown as wife not widow. By 1859 she had moved to London where her daughters married, she was a widow in 1861. But I can't find Samuel on the 1841 or 1851 censuses. I would appreciate advice on where I can find a record of their marriage, their birth records, and the birth of their eldest daughter (also Elizabeth) - in Cheltenham -  in 1833?

Hi urbsintacta

I am new to Rootsweb and I understand I will not be able to respond to Personal messages until I have made three postings. Once I have made another one I will get back to you. (I don't have any photos of the school to share - photos from my last visit to Montrose seem to have been mainly of the Football Club!)

I have been looking at the Townhead area of Montrose and my Neill ancestors are recorded as living there in 1871, next to the Brown Horse Inn. Jessie Neill, who married James
Smith, was my Great grandmother. I have lost touch with my Scottish relatives and have no pictures of them, so I was fascinated to see the picture of Ann Birse Smith, who would have been my grandfather's (another James) young sister. How brilliant to be able to share this. Thank you. :)
