Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Berwick area estates?
« on: Friday 31 August 12 23:51 BST (UK)  »
Just seen your query.  Until fairly recently the Greenwich Estates had an office at Belford & I believe they had archives there.  I'm not sure who is now the local land agent, but if you're still looking I can find out in next few days. I also know a number of Scremerston born people & may be able to help with specific names.

Thank you. I was wondering if there was a proper register.  Do you know if, when registering, they would have to give a work history?
G/Ma died when I was 11 & my Mum's stories were sketchy!

Thanks for that! Great photos on the site, shows what foresight on old buildings is worth!
I did see "not a lot survive" & will tel. them today.  They were very helpful re modern electoral roll look-up.  I was hoping there would be a local "digger"
As I said, I think there may still be relatives in area, but am very hesitant to burst in!

I've been researching my maternal Grandmother's roots, she was Margaret Brown dob 1887 in Carlton, eldest child of Violet & Benjamin.A Carlton mining family for long time.
On the 1901 census she is still in Carlton & listed as a "twine maker", but by 1911 she is a nurse in Newcastle upon Tyne, & in 1917 married Alfred Hedley.
I've always wondered how she made the move into nursing, & by chance found the excellent account of the 1904 opening of the very large new workhouse at Hunslet (on her doorstep), and the fact it had an infectious disease ward, which is what she did in N/cle for many years.  I think a sister, possibly Fanny, & maybe a brother could have been employed there as well.  However, this is guess work!
I would be grateful if anyone has any further knowledge re the Hunslet workhouse records, especially staff.
My G/mother had 8 siblings, research there is a bit spotty, & I'm mindful of living relatives still in area.

England / Re: Where to start?

Hi, Yes, she was nurse, listed in 1911 census as working in N/cle.  I have a gut feeling, that since she obviously had contact later on, that she may have gone home to Leeds/Rothwell/Carlton area for the birth.
UK daughter surfaced at her Mum's funeral in 1960's, much to distress/consternation of her half-brother & sister (both now gone).  No one would talk about her & she's sunk back into obscurity!  My cousin & I are trying to unravel the mystery.

Being fairly new to this game (!), I seek advice on how to find an illegitimate daughter, name u/k, probable dob 1910 - 1917, maybe Scotland/Yorkshire/Northumberland, with great surname of Mum as Brown?
As far as I can see, just not feasible, or affordable,  to go thro' every recorded birth.  Census records not much help as Mum was 1901 in Yorks., 1911 N/cle, (& 1917, marriage date), & I think, from family talk, Edinburgh in between!
This daughter visited her Mum in Newcastle sometime  late 1920's - 30's, so may have been taken in by other part of Brown family in Leeds/Rothwell area.     Brown family originally from Carlton nr. Leeds.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

Cumberland / Re: John Morray b.c. 1811 of Alston. Wife Mary
« on: Wednesday 08 August 12 20:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi Jean,
came across your posts as result of finding my Great Uncle's WWI medals, John Robert Morray, dob 1897, died France 4/10/17, Private 12/13th Btn. Northumberland Fusiliers. Until I looked at medals, didn't even know he existed!
My Dad's mother, Margaret Morray was his sister, dob 1889 married Matthew Henry Hunter 1914 in Newcastle.  I'm waiting for copy of marriage cert. to verify facts.
I'm running into similar census/birth records as yourself. After her birth I cannot find her on 1901/1911 census.
John dob 1862, Garrigill, (Alston), seems to have moved to Newcastle by 1901 & changed from lead mining to baking.
I think I've got this right, frankly tying me in knots!   So was getting an unoccupied password - hence curlygirl!

Northumberland / Re: Can you live in the TOWN HALL?
« on: Monday 06 August 12 22:27 BST (UK)  »
My mother, as a child in the 1920's, used to visit the caretaker who had a big flat in the old town hall building in the Bigg Market, N/cle. She said it was on the top floor & they used to lugg the coal all the way up the stairs.  That town hall was knocked down late'60's (ish).
