Thanks that is what I thought.  So until 1837 you did not have to notify anyone that you had a child born?  The only record of the birth would be if they were baptized?

I have an ancestor that I cannot find the baptism record on.  He was born in between 1817 and 1818.  Did you have to register a birth through baptism at that time or was it option.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

I found what I think is my great grandfather birth certificate.  How the name is Jessie not Jesse as I have it and it says he is a girl.  Is it possible the a mistake was made.  I also have the birth certificates for his brother Robert and sister Laura.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Norfolk / Ernest Henry Cooper 1901-1966

My grandfather Ernest Henry Cooper born 1901 and died 1966.  His parents Jesse Cooper and Ethel Frances Howard both died in about 1904.  I am told that Ethel Howard's parents brought him up.  I cannot find him on any census or on any documents until 1927 when he married my grandmother Annie Victoria Leach.

Any help/suggestions on where I should be looking would be greatly appreciated.
