Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Jennings in Oake 1780
« on: Thursday 06 September 12 16:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi Neil,
If you go to this site you will find BMD's for the parishes of Heathfield and Hillfarrance for that time period.    I found my William Jennings there, born April 1811 and also the marriage of his parents, William and Mary.   I know that some of your JENNING are from this area, and it is very near Oak.

 Good luck,

Hi Chris1234
Are you still there?  First I am curious as to how you were donated these wonderful transcripts, and thank you for caring for them, and sharing with the rest of us.
I am wondering if you would be able to check for me for JENNINGS who lived in tiny Heathfield during 1700's and 1800's.   My grgrgrandfather William Jennings was born in april 1811 to William and Mary.   I think they are the William and Mary who were married c 1809, but can't find any other children baptised before or after William.   Neither can I find Mary's maiden name, or William's history.    My line have been Gardners since early 1800's.
Thanks so much,
Wendy

If I can add to this discussion there is a lovely little story about Martha, widow, and her daughter Caroline's marriage.    It is on a website regarding Hillfarrance church history.   I think the word in the census was laundress.

oh dear, we already have a conflict.   My Walter from William, born 1811 and Jane would not have had a grandfather born in 1800.   Although I suspect that William's fa was Thomas, as his first son was Thomas, as was his.   Nevertheless, we are the same family, and can exchange 'proofs'!  I hope it is okay to send my email address through here.

I grew up in Cardiff,  hence the Glamorgan Jennings, but am now in Canada

Hope I'm not too late to join in!   The Walter Jennings that you are looking for is my great grandfather!   He was indeed the Walter listed in the 1851 census as living in the Dairy House at Way House in Somerset.   Charles Jennings lived in the same Dairy House, so I would hypothesize that he is a brother to William Jennings. Walter's father.
I have the marriage certificate for Walter Jennings and Harriet Hinde in Wales, and it shows his father as William a Gardner.
I do know of the other two Walters, one in Milverton and one in Essex, and wondered how they are connected.   "Walter" seems to have been an important family name at the time.
I'd be interested in communicating with other Jennings.

Wahoo, it worked.   Thanks for the link, Rex.   I found 94th regiment, and it looks like he wasn't reported as a deserter!  Waiting for his marriage certificate to see if he was still in the army, otherwise something is afoot, and not just the Regiment!

Hi T-Rex
Thank you for the suggestion.   I am actually a member of the library in Wales, but I must be thick as I can't figure out how to get old newspapers!   Is there a link?

Hi T-Rex,
Well desertion must be more common than I thought!   These are sad examples of that - but a little amusing too!    I don't suppose it would be easy to track down a deserter in those days, especially if he left town.    I am beginning to wonder if my grgrandad was one of those.
On a different note, how did you find the newspaper articles?
Regards, and thanks,
Wendy
