Cheshire / Re: 1851 Malpas - Done

I have attached a photo of the portrait. You can see that it has been cut down at some point from a larger oval picture. The number is the bottom corner looks like 90 to me - I am beginning to wonder if this is a lot older than originally thought - could it be 1690? I think what he is wearing is quite puritan in style (I am no expert mind you!) which might fit.

There is definitely some confusion as to actually how he is related to Ralph Stevenson. Sarah Brooke Done describes him as his Great Grandfather (which would be George Brooke). But in Randle Brooke's will of 1780 he describes him as his own Grandfather (which would be George Brooke's father). Randle was George's son and brother to Susannah Stevenson.

I have George Brooke's father as Thomas Brooke - which is where I differ from your tree

I don't know if anyone is still following this thread but I thought I would bring it up to date with what I know...

Sarah Brooke Done before her marriage to John Done was Sarah Brooke Peers (1784 Malpas), daughter of Joseph Peers and Martha Brooke.

Martha Brooke (1743 Harthill) was the daughter of Ambrose Brooke and Eleanor Ollerhead. Ambrose Brooke was the brother of Susannah Brooke (who married Ralph Stevenson in 1734 St Michael, Chester). Their son Ambrose Stevenson was Martha Brooke's cousin. Ambrose Stevenson was Ralph's father and so that is the connection with Sarah Brooke Done.

Sarah refers to the portrait of Ralph's Great Grandfather, Randle Brooke. This is what has thrown me for some time as Ralph's great grandfather was George Brooke (Susannah's father). However, George died when his children were young, leaving them in the guardianship of his brothers Ambrose and Randle. I think this is where the confusion probably lies.

The portrait - which has survived! (I managed to track down to some distant relatives in the Malpas area) - is of an elderly man and so it cannot be of George who died relatively young.

That is the theory so far.... but if anyone has any more information I would love to hear it!

Brilliant Kev thank you! I had narrowed it down to two Mary's and one had a father Thomas a butcher so that is excellent news.

I am based in the North West and visit the Lancashire Record Office on a regular basis so if you ever have any ancestors from up north you need checking get in touch and I'll see if I can return the favour.

Thanks again  ;D

Thank you Kev that would be great - yes it is James Walker Hague I am interested in. Mary is very elusive - I think I may have found her living in Scarborough in 1871 as Mary Pearson the "wife" of Francis Pearson. They are lodgers along with a six year old girl Emily Hague. Emily Hague was allegedly the daughter of James Walker Hague and Mary and was baptised in Manchester when she was 2 years old. In later censuses she usually states she was born in London. My theory is that Mary left James prior to the 1861 census, ran away to London and had Emily, repented and returned briefly to her husband before going off again with Francis Pearson and landing back in Scarborough. I cannot find her in 1861 or after 1871 and until I know more about her from the marriage I cannot identify her in 51 or 41 either! So as you can imagine I would love to have the details of her marriage  ;D

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Marriage Look up Scarborough, St Mary
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 18:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me out and check out a marriage at Scarborough, St Mary. The marriage took place on 12 November 1853 between James Walker Hague and Mary Sedman (got this from a newspaper announcement). I would really like to find out Mary Sedman's age and father's name as she never appears on the census living with her husband so I am having trouble getting any further with her.

Keeping my fingers crossed! Thank you

Denbighshire / Re: Edward Roberts Denbigh, Help Please

I believe the marriage transcript given earlier for Edward Thomas Roberts at Llangollen is the wrong one. There are two marriages in the same quarter between Edward Roberts and Edith Williams. Seems likely as someone else has mentioned that it is the the other one - at St Asaph. Looking at Northwalesbmd it is a civil marriage so would need to order the marriage certificate.

Wouldn't want to send someone down the wrong path  ;)
