Antrim / Re: Porter family in Shore Road, Belfast
« on: Sunday 15 June 14 22:50 BST (UK)  »
My Porter is from Belfast, but that is all I know.
William Porter (b about 1800) was Protestant and eloped to Canada with the Catholic Love-of-his-life Margaret Manley, also of Belfast. She was from a wealthy family.  That is all I have from their granddaughter's writings.

Do you have a missing William in your tree?? ;D
Regards,
Dianne

I also am excited to see this paybook.  I guess because they are in the midst of changes, is the reason my email to the Orange Order has gone unanswered.  (Actually answered to tell me she was passing it on the appropriate person).
My ancestor fought in the Battle of the Boyne and family history has it that a piece of the battle banner of William of Orange hung on the wall of the family home. Too bad later descendants were only boys and it probably got thrown out.

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Re: John Mavor and Mary Sangster in Peterhead
« on: Saturday 20 April 13 20:12 BST (UK)  »
Sons George and John were born 1796 and 1800 in Peterhead. I don't know about other children. So I figure John Sr and Mary were married before 1796 and probably born in the 1770's.  That is virtually all the info I have, other than that John Sr was a butcher in Peterhead.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / John Mavor and Mary Sangster in Peterhead
« on: Saturday 20 April 13 17:26 BST (UK)  »
John Mavor, butcher, was married to Mary Sangster.  They lived in Peterhead and I know only 2 sons, George Mavor (died 1869 in Kirktown) and John Mavor (married and lived in Ellon).
I would like to get marriage of John and Mary Sangster, or John's death to find out who his parents were.  Thanks so much.  Dianne

Hold on,first of all, let's recap on what information you've got.I assume you have a copy of Mary's marriage certificate to John Shepherd? William Fraser (crofter), is down as Mary's reputed father. This proves that William & Elizabeth weren't married to each other! There are only 2 possible births for a Mary Mavor.I have purchased copies of both which turned out to be the same birth. One was registered in Old Meldrum & the other in Ellon. Elizabeth was living at Broomfield, Ellon at that time. It was common for an illegitimate child to be registered under their mother's maiden name & to be brought up under another surname.  In instances like this it's always easiest to search for the least common surname first! The 1881 census that Malky spotted is not for your ancestors. I checked out the 1891 & 1901 censuses  & there is a patient Mary Ann Shepherd in the Royal Asylum. Her birth date & place of birth doesn't tie in with your Mary though. 1891 = born c1851. 1901= born c1852, Tarves. Don't know where cookies4 info on 1901 census comes from?

FLST:  My Mavors are from Ellon. Elizabeth Ledingham married to John Mavor and lived in Broomfield.  I found 4 children (1828 - first born Alexander named after Johns Father and Elizabeth's father, 1834 - Francis, 1839 - John Ledingham, 1849 - Leslie) but not all. It would stand to reason that they had a daughter named Elizabeth, after her mother. The Ledingham name was passed down more generations.
Where would I find their birth certificates and more info of Elizabeth and Johns children?  The only info I got was from FamilySearch
Thanks / Dianne

Yes Danishdots.
But they were originally from England.  My ancestor was a personal guard to William of Orange, and for his service, and bravery in the Battle of the Boyne, he was given lands in Ireland.  I am almost back to this person, just one generation away - the Irish Pedigree of Seale Family has given a couple of choices but in early 1900's they could not make the connection.  Records are hard to come by in Ireland, so many are lost.

Thanks for the great suggestions.  I will try all them.
Yes, The Seale Family Tree is mine, and I do have info - I am looking for living relatives.  Was hoping to find some named on the obituaries.  I found some other family that way, in Winnipeg.

I will have to look into that "shooting in the head" business - love the odd stories.

Thanks again.
