If this is Jane's family, as seems likely, she wasn't with them at the time of the 1851 census?

I have copies of Brothers Pride passenger lists - originals and ones transcribed by various people.

Everything I know about Jane specifically is in my first post.

I think the Croydon Jane Frances is very likely to be her.

Thanks everyone. :)

John Alfred Ernest St Quentin married Mary Ann Emerson in New Zealand in 1870.
1870/7665

They may have come back to Australia.

Gerry

Yes they did - in 1874 on Albion to Melbourne.

Thanks - I thought that I'd put the same post on the Oz and Kiwi boards - didn't realise it would cause confusion. :)

Indeed - more than old enough to be her father. By all accounts he was a charisimatic and good looking man but even so she was 12 years younger than his oldest son!

Speaking of whom - "Feb 5th 1886 Montague Street South Brisbane the wife of WC Quinton Esq of a son" -  would have been 49 if St Q's son.

Might not be him but spelling same as earlier family records and he may not have reinvented himself as a St Quentin.

Hard one this because name is spelled variously. She was born in Surrey c 1845/46. Arrived Lyttelton on board Brothers Pride Dec 1853.

She refused to pay her fare claiming she was underage when she signed the note and in any event the contract was in England and not enforceable in NZ; may have gone 'on the town'.

Any one heard of her?  the most likely name I have found in the 1851 UK census is Jane Mews but the ships list has her as Mewes and also appears as Mienes. The letter she wrote to the immigration officials is hard to decipher.
