Re: Elijah Wiltshire

Hi
I am looking for the death date of Elijah Wiltshire, who was born in Tasmania, Australia on February 11th 1869. I am on Ancestry.com and can't find any death record there and also none on Trove. I am wondering if there would be any other list to look at? He was the son of a convict, Abraham Wiltshire and a young girl named Emily Jane ROSE.

Any help with another source to find this information would be appreciated.

Thanks for that info. What I would specifically like to know is where they actually came from and who with. I have found one branch of my tree where all the family including in-laws came out together, so they had a whole network of support in this country. I would like to know if they were affluent or not and what they did for a living in Adelaide. I have seen trove articles where a marriage is announced, referring to the men as 'esquire'. What does that mean as far as social status? All very interesting. this is the part of the family I know little of.
Thanks to those who have taken the time to help.

Australia / Fewster Family of Adelaide
« on: Monday 18 March 13 00:50 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my ancestors, who were named Fewster and Horwood. Edwin Fewster married Hester Horwood. They had William Fewster at sea in 1840. They arrived aboard the "Eliza" on May 14th 1840.

William was my gg grandfather and married Mary Ann Langley (2nd wife) and Ruth Richmond (1st wife). I come from Mary Ann Langley and William Fewster. I know very little about them, but I get the impression they were fairly affluent.

I don't really know where to go from now to search for more information. I have been to trove.

I am researching a ggg grandmother named Sarah Ann Dolby. She was apparently born in London in 1827 and arrived in Australia on Feb 6th 1840. At this time she would have been 12 years old. Obviously she would have travelled with family. I believe she arrived on the "Java" from London to Port Adelaide, only there is no record of her on the passenger list. I have heard that these lists aren't always accurate. There is mention of her arriving on the Java in at least one Trove article I have seen.

I am wondering if anybody can put me onto a good website to get passenger lists, not just South Australia, but anywhere. The ones I am using at the moment are familyhistorysa and slsa.sa.gov.au

I am at a dead end at the moment. I don't know who she came out with, but I have the names Samuel and Charlotte. I cant remember where I got these from.

Australia / Peter POTTER born 1793 arrived Port Adelaide
« on: Tuesday 18 December 12 06:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am wanting any information at all on Peter Potter b. 1793, who arrived on the Somersetshire on August 24th 1839, Port Adelaide. He had about ten children with him. I descend from his son James who was married to Ellen Martin. Their son was Henry Potter who married Mary Dolby Emmett. They had William Frank Potter. She arrived with him (and was married). They settled in Lyndoch Valley, South Australia. Photos would be appreciated, I do not have a photo of any Potter past my grandfather.

The family was quite secretive, so almost no information was passed down. All my grandfather knew was the names of his parents.

Hi Lee-Ann,

Thank you so much for your reply. I would be very interested in having a photo of Capt. Dowsett. I am wondering if you would be able to email me a copy or tell me how to obtain one. I did actually find a photo of the Dowsett family at the State Library. I have just read below that you are a descendant of the Captain and Grace as well. They would be my ggg grandparents. I come from their son William Spencer Dowsett. I would be happy to email you the Dowsett photo if you would like it. William Spencer would be my gg grandfather and his son, Spencer Dowsett was my g grandfather. His daughter Lorna Dowsett was my grandma. She told my some about the Dowsetts, but left out certain parts! I don't know if that was on purpose or not. She was born in 1904. My dad shares the same name as my gg grandfather, William Spencer.  Ann Stanmore Cook and George Rutt were my gggg grandparents. My email is (*)
I am not that good at navigating around rootschat and only found your post because I got a notification email today.

How would I locate your photos? Are you on ancestry.com

I have never seen a photo of Edward. I did find a photo of Grace outside her Alberton home in Queen Street. It was on ancestry.com It would have been taken in 1880's. I would love to know more about the family. Any information you can share would be much appreciated. I did ask my grandma as much as possible when she was alive. I know the Rutts came out on the Hooghly in 1839. Also that Mary Ann was Graces's daughter and brought up as the Captain's which shows how decent he was. Grandma didn't mention this, I don't know if she even knew. I also only recently found out that half of the family died soon after arrival.

Thanks again for your reply,

Lyn

Australia / Proctor and Langley surname connection
« on: Friday 07 December 12 23:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am wondering if anyone can help me. My great great grandmother was Mary Ann Langley born abt. 1852 died 1938 in South Australia as married name Mary Ann Fewster. There is some connection to the surname "Proctor", which I can't figure out. Her son was Garnet Proctor Langley Fewster, who died when he was 4 years old. I have looked at familyHistorySAinfo website and found there was a John Proctor and Ann Langley arriving with 2 sons in 1840 on the Charles Kerr from London. I had believed that Mary Ann was born in England, but now not so sure. Mary Ann married William Fewster after the death of his first wife, Ruth Richmond (is my understanding).

I am on ancestry.com and I have also looked at Trove as well as the website above.

I am wondering if anybody can suggest another website or another way to search for this information. I am not that good at utilising everything ancestry.com has to offer.

There is some connection here, I just can't put it together.

Any help would be appreciated.
