Hi Hall descendants
I am descended from another line of the Hall family. I live in Sydney, Australia, and have traced back to William Hall, in England, born about 1770, and have information on the line to Thomas Henry.

I have checked the marriage bonds that we have and there is no mention at all of his status, whether widower or batchelor...only age...27.

Hi Dave
We're still digging. It's possible that the William's could not be the same ones...William had a son William who was a woolstapler...was in London from the 1830's

The Thomas was not a son..William's son Thomas was not born until 1824...he had no Thomas by his first marriage so if they're related he could only be a brother or father.

We are currently trying to find where William came from...checking Stockport where his original partner James Daniel came from.

I have written to the archives at Sheepscar..last time we were there they mentioned that they have business records.

We'll keep digging and hopefully get a breakthrough....thanks again for all your help

Thanks Dave...more material to sift through...you are right..it was his will which named Leeds as his place of residence..I'll go back through my records to see what I can find....are you avoiding the Olympic chaos?

Hi Dave
These Halls are getting more complicated. School holidays are on here and I have been busy doing my nanna duties. Ken went to the Genealogical Society yesterday and came up with these results:
Fom Leeds Intelligencer
1793 James Daniel, patent hat maker from Stockportopened a warehouse near Red Bull Inn Leeds
1794 Daniel Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate
1795 William Hall & co on the bridge (j Daniel was bankrupt in 1795)
Leeds Directory
1797 & 1798 Hall & co patent hat makwers bridge
1800 Hall & co patent hat warehouse, Briggate
1807 Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate (Hall William volunteer Amen Corner)
1809 Hall, William, hatter & woolstapler, Briggate
1814 1815 Hat Manufacturers: Hall, William, 91 Briggate;Woolstapler, Hall, Thomas, 91 Briggate
1817 Hall, William, hatter & woolstapler & agent to the LondonUnion Fire Office, 91 Briggate; Hall, Mary, straw hat maker, 91 Briggate
1818 1820 Commercial Directory: Woolstapler,Hall, William, 91 Briggate; Hatters:Hall, William, 91 Briggate
1820 Baines  Woolstapler, Hall William, Queens Court, Call Lane (printer:Wm Headley, 91 Briggate) was woolstapler in Lands Lane in 1820

General & Commercial Directory of Leeds, 1826; Hall, Wm, woolstapler, 5 Queens Court, Call Lane: h..1 Blundell Place Sunny Bank, St James street

This all poses more questions...was Thomas the father or a brother. Are all the Williams the same person or is William, the son also involved. William, the father died in Leeds in 1828

We have friends in Oxford who lament on your weather. water restrictions etc. Our summer was pretty poor so it's nice to get a sunny winter's day once in a while.

I have no idea on William's father's name, nor where he was born...I could guess William as most of the children in the families called their fist son William...maybe that's too much of an assumption, but worth a try. He seemed to be fairly entrenched in Leeds in the hat business from a fairly young age...however I have been wrong before!

An example...William Milner was Thomas's father in law...not George..an interesting coincidence though.
Good night..

Hi Dave...a beautful day here.
We believe that the reason for Thomas's late baptism may have been that he was to inherit from the estate of his half brother and maybe needed proof of age. James Asbridge Hall batchelor, a son of William and Isabella, died in 1844, and Thomas was mentioned in his probate.

Thomas was born in Leeds where William and Mary lived until William's death in 1828 (his will states Leeds as his dwelling place).

It is interesting to note that another occupant in the house rented by Mary as a widow, was George Milner, whose daughter Thomas eventually married. Mary obviously moved here after the death of William as she was left an annuity in the will and money was left for the maintenance of Phillip and Thomas, as minors.

Hi Dave...It is now midnight in Sydney. One of William's sons had the name  James Asbridge Hall who was a brother of my gg grandfather Matthew, a surgeon in Wortley. Two of Matthew's children also had the name Asbridge as a second name, so we followed through and found William Asbridge of Cockermouth with a daughter Isabella. We have the marriage bond of William Hall, 27 to Isabella Asbridge, 21 in Cockermouth in 1799.
My gg grandfather Matthew married Mary Ann Abbey in St Peter's Leeds and their children were christened there.
This family has proved a challenge, as we know Matthew's death and have his will but have never been able to find a burial...spent a week in Leeds Library several years ago and also archives at Sheepscar with no success...found his house "Greenhill House" in Wortley and wandered through the cemetery across the road..still no success. I guess one day we'll find the missing burial and baptisms....it's a challenge!!
