World War One / Re: R. Kavanagh - Royal Field Artillery
« on: Monday 12 January 15 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am pleased to advise that after a lengthy war graves adjudication process conducted by the National Army Museum, the CWGC have now confirmed that Gunner Richard Kavanagh qualifies for commemoration as a Commonwealth war casualty.

Extract from the Adjudication Form : -

"Although limited in documentation, Gnr. Kavanagh's service record provides key information regarding his disability and discharge from the army. It is evident that the Medical Board reviewing Gnr. Kavanagh's condition agreed that his nephritis was the result of active service and ultimately led to his discharge in September 1916. The same condition claimed his life in December that year. As his death occurred during the First World War qualifying dates and can be strongly linked to his military service, he qualifies for commemoration by the CWGC."

As a final chapter to the positive outcome of this research made possible by the contributors to RootsChat, it would be really great to share this information with any surviving relatives of Gnr. Kavanagh. I wonder if anyone (perhaps around Liverpool)  can assist? Here are the family siblings that appear on the 1911 Census living in West Derby which is a good starting point :-

James Joseph    Kavanagh    Son    -    Male    7    1904    Lanc Liverpool    School

World War One / Re: George Owen Casualty Details?

Eric,
Apologies for the delay in replying - its been quite a while since I last logged on to RootsChat, but it was a nice surprise to see your message.

The reason for my inquiry was to try and pin-point if George Joseph Owen is the same man who is commemorated on the LNWR (London & North Western Railway) Great War Roll of honour which lists a Private G.Owen who was employed as a Goods Porter at what was then the Park Lane goods Depot in Liverpool.
My research had narrowed it down to this being George Joseph. It would be great if you do happen to know if he was a railwayman before he signed up?

Jim, unfortunately the detail on the memorial does not include any other details apart from name. see.... http://www.merseysiderollofhonour.co.uk/memorials/southsefton/bootle/linacrestandrew.php

I also had a look at details of the Bootle civic WW1 memorial but no G. Owen is listed.

World War One / George Owen Casualty Details?
« on: Thursday 27 March 14 21:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information relating to a George Owen who is recorded on the St.Andrew C.of E. Church, Linacre (Bootle) WW1 memorial.

I have searched Soldiers Died, but the only soldier that I can find that could be him is 3852 George Joseph Owen, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers).
CWGC gives additional detail - Son of John Owen, of 9, Mackenzie St., Everton, Liverpool.

Is this the same man that appears on the memorial?

Many thanks for any pointers!

Thank you Adrian for the comprehensive research and quick response. It looks like one of those rare occasions when there are just two possibilities to explore and the relevant records (especially the Service Record for 1757 Gnr R. Kavanagh - Royal Field Artillery) still exists. Even so, I am amazed that you could follow a documented trail right through to his death.
There is also an entry I found in the LNWR Roll of Honour for R.W. Kavanagh a Checker employed at Edge Hill which tallies with the Service Record. I am sure you have identified the right man.

I have also taken up your suggestion to contact the In From the Cold Project to propose that 1757 Gunner Richard Kavanagh is a suitable candidate for further investigation with a view to CWGC commemoration. I will keep you posted on what they advise and how this progresses.

Once again, many thanks for your efforts - especially rewarding as your research may have uncovered information that will eventually lead to official CWGC recognition.

I am trying to find out more about a soldier listed on the Liverpool Hall of Remembrance on-line database. He is listed as : -

Panel 68   PTE.   R.   KAVANAGH       R.F.A. (1ST WEST LANCS.)

I have found a 195608 Gunner Richard Kavanagh in Soldiers Died. Born Portsmouth, enlisted Edinburgh, and on the CWGC site the same soldier is listed as serving with 72nd Bty. 38th Bde.

My question is, are they one in the same person - or is the Hall of Remembrance entry correct and refers to a different soldier.
Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Sirim

World War One / Re: F. Clark "THE KING'S" (L'POOL) REGT. (20TH BATT.)
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 20:52 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Milly for your quick and thorough response which I believe gives me the answer to my question.

Although it differs from the Hall of Remembrance, CLARK   FRED   F   23      21/03/1918      202679 is from Edge Hill (Liverpool). The F.Clark that I am interested in was employed as a Locomotive Cleaner by the LNWR at Edge Hill. I checked the 1911 census and found Fred Clark, occupation: Engine cleaner, son of Isabella Clark, living at an address in Wavertree - which is close to Edge Hill. This ties in with the information you provided.

The anomaly in relation to the Hall of Remembrance database, is that he served with the East Lancs Regt. Either he is a different (additional) F.Clark to the one recorded , or I tend to suspect that he is incorrectly recorded as serving with the Kings Liverpool 20th Batn.

Many thanks for your assistance.

World War One / F. Clark "THE KING'S" (L'POOL) REGT. (20TH BATT.)
« on: Saturday 01 September 12 23:01 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down the casualty details for Pte F. Clark of The Kings (L'POOL) REGT. (20TH BATT.)

On the Liverpool Town Hall roll of honour database (Hall of Remembrance) there is a Pte. F. Clark and a Pte. F. L. Clark listed. However, the only Private F.Clark listed on CWGC and Soldiers Died relates to Service No. 22647 (F.L.Clark).

I wonder if anyone may have any information (date of death, age, parents names and address etc) for the other F. Clark?

Thanks for any info or pointers.
