Hi insomniac,

Have you seen this on FreeBMD, which is available online free to all (just google it):

NICHOLAS HOUGHTON
Births SEP (i.e., third quarter) 1854
Wigan
8c, 63

Also from same source:

ELLEN HOUGHTON & WILLIAM HIGHTON
Marriages JUN 1857
Wigan
8c, 74

And:

NICHOLAS HOUGHTON & MARY JANE FORSHAW
Marriages SEP 1879
Wigan
8c, 53

I double-checked the marriages on Lancashire BMD (also free online).

Barbara,

I suggest that you look for THOMAS HOWELL on the 1911 census site.  I believe that I may have found him on their index (in Wigan, born circa 1850).  To see the full transcription and/or image requires payment.  After locating ancestors via the index, I have paid to use the site and made several useful finds.

I hope that this suggestion does not violate copyright rules.

Good luck,

Kay in USA

PS  Have you checked deaths on FreeBMD?

I can't offer you much help, but if you google as follows

"buckley hall" orphanage

you will find a number of hits that might be of interest to you.

Hi Jack,

At the risk of asking the obvious, have you checked the IGI?  There is an ENOCH ASCROFT in Wigan, born 1790 and married 1823, with other details listed as well.  Could he be Enoch, the father?  Unfortunately, nothing on Enoch, the son.

Hi Kim,

Are you aware that you can find that directory online at no charge?  Go to:

www.historicaldirectories.org

I've used it many times and think it is excellent.

Good luck,

Kay

PS  Sorry -- I just noticed that you need PRE 1925.

Hi Jenny!

Hope you don't mind my putting in my two-cents worth:  If you look at Lancashire BMD, you will find an ANNIE LEVI marrying a JOHN TAYLOR in 1881, Bury Registry Office.  Sounds right, doesn't it?

Hi Lindy,

At the risk of stating the obvious:  Have you checked the IGI?  There are slews of GREGORYs listed in Westhoughton, going way back.

BTee:

It's me again.  Here's an interesting tidbit for you to consider.

I found a GRACE EDWARDS (mistranscribed as GRAD EDWARD) on the 1851 census for Manchester, living at 15 Cock Gates in the Cathedral area.  She was enumerated as follows:  age 21, unmarried,  lodger, occupation winder for (illegible).  On the line below was JOHN EDWARDS, age 11 months.

What do you think?

Hi again, BTee!

I don't know if this helps you, but I looked for FRANCES by searching for any FURNIVAL born in 1874 +/- 2 years for all years on the entire UK census.  I found the following:

1891 census for Cheadle, Cheshire
FANNY FURNIVAL
age 16
born in Manchester
boarder
occupation: cotton winder

I could not find her anywhere on the 1901 census.  Then I checked FreeBMD and found a FRANCES FURNIVAL who married REUBEN BENNETT in Stockport (MAR 1901 8a, 124).  With that info, I found them on the 1901 census in Stockport, Cheshire.  They had a daughter, age 9 days, named GRACE!!!  Sounds right, doesn't it?  Of course, the only way to be sure is to send for the marriage cert to determine whether her father is JOHN FURNIVAL the printer.

Good luck,
