Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Rosina Leary update
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 12:17 BST (UK)  »
I would like to say thanks to my fellow Roots Chatters  who viewed my post & to the ones who replied to me, in doing so ive now got a Death Reg for my Grt, Grt Gran, it is Rosina Ask, September 1920, Portsmouth, 2b 474, age 86.

Now i was asked if i had a Marriage Cert for my Grt,Grt Gran & yes i have found one, here it is.   Date of Marriage: 17th April 1855.
Place of marriage: Holy Trinity Church in the parish of Portsea in the county of Southampton.
William Ask was a seaman & a widower at the time of the marriage.
Rosina Leary was a spinster at the time of the marriage.
Williams father was also called William Ask & he was also a Seaman.
Rosina,s father was Matthew Leary & he was a Labourer.
Witnesses were Robert Talbot and Elliza Leary, Elliza could have been a sister of Rosina?
William Ask must have been illiterate as his mark is 'x' rather than a signature.
I can,t make out there ages on cert as its very distorted the wrting.
Hopefully somewhere out there, this  info may lead me in the direction of a birth cert for her, as this, if possible would make  my day.
Kindest Regards to all.
Leslie Webster.

« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 05:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Is there anyone in the Hampsire area who can help or shed light on the birth of my grt,grt granma,  I do have this info on her  1851 Cenus HO107/1633 folio39 pg8. House of Industry, Carisbrooke. Hampshire.  Rosina Leary, 18 (c 1833), Prostitute, born Hampshire, Newport, Isle WIght,  I thought it was important to include to include this entry as it appears to be the only cenus that has Rosina birth town on it? & we know she married a William Ask.  I should point out with a last name Leary, that could be Catholic, I don,t know.

I woul appreciate any help or guidence that can be given to me.
Kindest regards

Leslie Webster

Hi All.  Is there anyone out there who can help me trace my grt,grt gran birth record. She was in the 1881 census(TNA reference RG111139Folio44 page4)Shows George Pragnell (sic)and Pollie(possiblya pet name for Rosina) with 3 children Rosaline(14) clara(11) Ada(9) Sarah(7), Ada by the way is my grt granma, i was recently able to get a copy of my grt grans birth certificate Ada Ask, so being able to find out my grt,grt grans maiden name which was on the certificate & that being Leary, she had herself named Rosina ,Pragnell, late Ask, formerly Leary, now i do know that she was never married to any of these gentlemen, she was born around 1842 to 1843 as she was 38 yrs old in the 1881 cenus & i believe from Portsea or Isle of Wight that may have been born, her daughter Ada was born 1873 in the district of Portsea Address being 8 Chapel View , Portsea this is from her birth certifacte I also believe that she ended up a Pauper in the Island Workhouse in Portsea.   Hope some one can help.

Hi Leslie,

Ages are not always 100% accurate on census. Then again, you have to consider the exact date. The census was taken on 31 March 1901.

do. ist short for 'ditto' (= same as above)

I do think the 1901 census must be right - there certainly isn't anything closer.

Whose father was a chimney sweep, then? Ada's?

Mother's names are not given on marriage certificates so unfortunately there's nothing we can conclude from that....
Hi Tati yes the chimney sweep was my Grt Grans Ada,s Dad hope this a help to you & many thanks for helping me out.

Hi All

I checked the GRO indexes for births for Ada ASK, there were none in 1873 or the 1st Qtr of 1874.

There were 2 under the surname ASH.

Ada ASH born 3rdQTR 1873 Birmingham
Ada Emily ASH born 2nd QTR 1873 Islington.

I notice on the 1901 census at the Parish of Portsmouth Workhouse

Rose ASKE widow aged 67

and on 1891 census at the Portsea Island Union Workhouse is a

Rosina ASK widow aged 55

Could this lady be Ada's mother.

The Peter & Emily DENHAM who witnessed the marriage appear to be Charles' brother & sister-in-law.  They didn't have anyone other than their children living with them on the 1891 census.

Was Ada's father deceased when she got married?  She was under age, who gave permission for the marriage?

Genni .Hi Genni according to the marriage certificate, her father George Ask signed the cert, any help?
Many thanks for what you are doing
.
Regards Leslie

Is this the family in 1901?

RG13/995 73 20
153 Wingfield Street Portsmouth

Charles E Denham, head, 34, Chief Stoker HM Navy men?, b. Hants Portsmouth
Ada, wife, 27, b. do.
Charles E, son, 4, b. do.
George W, son, 11mo, b. do.

Hi Tati many thanks for your reply , it sounds as if you may be half right ?as on the marriage certificate Charles Edward Denham was a Stoker aboard the H.M Duke of Wellington 1892 the day of the marriage ,and age was 26,Ada my Gran was 19yrs old,so these ages you have i.e 34& 27yrs old . & they had a son Charles but ihave not heard of the George son?her dad,s name was George Ask as was on marriage certificate, did you get that info from 1901 census, because 19yrs in 1892 when she married , she would have been 27 or 28 what do you think?by the way what does do.stand for?  Kind Regards  Leslie Webster  11 St Hughes Place Salisbury Dns 5108 Adelaide South Australia

Hi

There is an Ada Elizabeth Ask registered in Goole (Yorkshire) in the September qtr of 1875 - this would have made her 16 at the time of the marriage!  Do you think she might have lied about her age?  I can't see another one on 1872/3.

The UK BMD indexes can be viewed free on Ancestry.co.uk.
Hi Bill many thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it,you may be right about her, did she lie about her age? i notice on her marriage certificate that it was her father George Ask who was a chimney sweep, that signed on the certificate, & not her mother, makes me think her mother was dead? as my Gran married a Charles Denham & the witnesses on the marriage certificate were named Emily Denham & Peter Henry James Denham, if her Mum was dead was she being brought by this Denhams? this thought has justRegards  occur ed to me what do you think?
