Dear kaysii
Thank you for your information on the Peachment's.  This is incredibly helpful - a new line of enquiry for me.  At suggestion of Yorklass, I have now a map of parishes so can understand a little better the geography - I was amazed at the number of parishes in Norfolk!
Thanks much for this help
Philip ;) :)

Yes the burial record does show that Elizabeth as the daughter of Barnard and Elizabeth.  We did a fairly comprehensive search and the opinion of those at the record office at the time was that this was possibly a recording error, for two reasons: 1. The death record matches the inscription on the tombstone in the Churchyard at Aylsham, 2. No other married Barnard Beckham existed in the records at that time.  Seems like an idle moment on the part of the parish priest (maybe too much altar wine??).  This could of course be entirely wrong.  Thanks again
Philip

Hello again Trevor,
Unfortunately I do not have the marraige of Barnard and Susannah - you are probably correct in saying that they didn't marry in Aylesham.  I did do a fairly comprehensive search of Aylesham records but turned up nothing. Although my research was done at the Norwich Records Centre using microfiche indexes and then taking copies of microfilmed documents.  I could well have missed something.  Which brings me to the question as to whether or not I ought to have checked other spellings for mis-transcription?
Thanks again,
Philip

Hello and thank you very much for your kind assistance.  Yes this is my ancestor Barnard Beckham!  We (my wife and I) were fortunate to spend a year in UK in 2004 and spent part of that time in Norfolk, doing some research on family.  We actaully visited the parish church in Aylesham and located the headstones (another of the family was located there too).  Unfortunately our search ahs come to an abrupt halt in that we just cannot seem to find any further details of Barnard.  We are trying to find his birth record, but this seems exceedingly difficult.
thanks for your assistance.  Much appreciated.
Regards,

Cork / Re: Bewley Family

Hello again,
Sorry I didn't actually answer the questions you put to me!  Here we go:
1. is the same family as the coffee people?  - My work in looking at the Bewley's of Dublin would suggest possibly not, although there is no record of other Bewley families emigrating to Ireland.
2. Do you have an approx date of birth? - Death record of his son would suggest he was born in 1821 , his Memorial in the Dunedin Cemetery suggests 1823, and his enlistment in the Dunedin Militia suggest also 1823.
3. Do the records you checked cover this period? - Yes I have checked everything I can possibly think of which would cover the period from around 1810 to 1843 (the time of his marriage in Cape Town South Africa).
4. Any possible location in Cork city or county? - Unfortunately I cannot say so.  But the entry on his son's death certificate states "County Cork".  My feeling is that if he were from Cork City he might have been a bit more precise, but this is speculation - it may merely have relied upon the interpretation of the person recording the details at the time.
Thanks again
Regards,
Philip

Thanks much for your interest and reply.  I have studied the book The Bewleys of Cumberland, Their Irish and Other Descendants, as well as looking at the family history in dublin.  None of this seems to be connected - or if it is I just cannot make the link.  Unfortunately the only concrete bit of evidence I have to go is the birth record of a son, Frederick (Victoria Australia), showing his age in 1854 as 33 years, ie born 1821, and place of birth as "County Cork, Ireland".  I have been looking at everything I can think of for the past fifteen years and it sort of feels a bit like mission impossible.  Anyway I would be grateful for any help you might be able to give me.  Kind regards, Philip Bewley

Norfolk / Barnard Beckham born 1738

I have traced my ancestors to Barnard Beckham (born 1738 calculated from the Parish record of his death in 1798 in Aylesham) of Norfolk.  Is anyone researching this family, and if so could perhaps suggest further lines of enquiry?
