The person in the cemetery I am looking for is Ann Durkin died 1877. Could be under the name of Ann Johnston.

Hi Shelly

I'm a descendant of George Bartlett and Annie Hughes (Yore/Yew, Hancock, Johnston... seems she married everyone except for George  ;D )

Been looking for her death for 15 years without success... how did she end up a 'Durkin'?

Looks like the Goobang Cemetery pages on the Australian Cemetery Index has been updated since your OP:

No George or Annie, though  :(

More than happy to share what I've found about the family, if your friend would like it.

Lancashire / Re: William Henry Lee b. Manchester c.1859 (but to whom...?)

Thanks Radcliff, that's an outside the square one :)

I hadn't gone that far out of town... not being familiar with the geography, I have wondered what how far out of Manchester to search.

In 1881 the eldest Child is down as William Hibbert aged 22 a coal miner,

Looks like that William kept the Hibbert name:
Name: William Hibbert
Age:    28
Rank or Profession: Collier
Marriage Date: 13 Jul 1887
Parish: Westhoughton, St Bartholomew
Father's Name: Peter Hibbert
Spouse's Name: Betty Woodward

William & Betty Hibbert are on the next three censuses in Westhoughton (birthplace and ages all tally).

Ah, the quest continues...

Thanks Allan

It all helps :)  A pair of fresh eyes can look at it from a new perspective.

William Lee christened 3rd October 1860 , Manchester ,
parents William Lee and Martha ...although baptised Oct 1860...he may have been born earlier ?

I have a question mark on that William & Martha (nee Wilkinson) Lee.  Their young William was born 19 Sept 1860 (a year out, but close) and baptised St Simon and St Jude.  1861 & 1871 census they're in the same parish and William senior's occupation is labourer (perhaps...?)

Young William is 7mths old on the 1861 census, but not present on the 1871 census.  Then I lose track of the whole family (which is why they're still a question mark).

Thanks heatherjulie :)

I've tried to work out if any family link exists with the marriage witnesses.  The only (tenuous, LOL) link I could find was that a witness to the Hudson's marriage was "Joseph Ogden Allen"... and one of the possibilities for William's mother is Martha (nee Ogden).

I'll go back to it and have another look, just in case...

Thanks for the welcome mshrmh :)

Ah, Lee, Lea, Leigh, Leah... even Lowe, Law, Leo (and adding an 's' to the end of them all).

Nothing seems to fit well with the information I've got (all of which seems to fit together consistently).  Even moving a couple of years either side hasn't produced a likely set of parents.

Have you considered William Henry Lea, registered September quarter 1859 Chorlton 8c 593 (LancashireBMD as Hulme). Chorlton registration district covered parts of the Manchester area - Hulme is quite close to the city centre:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/chorlton.html

I haven't tried looking for this one on the census, but the date seems to fit.

I haven't purchased the certificate for that William, but my best efforts had pointed to him being the son of William & Ellen/Eleanor Lea (consistently spelled 'Lea').

Father's occupation seems to fit (variously "core maker", "iron moulder"... which sound somewhat like a "boiler maker").

Problems are: Dad's still alive on the 1891 census... and there's a better match for young William "Lea", married to someone else in 1891.

Thus far I've been searching census and birth + baptism records for all the sub-districts of Manchester and in Salford.  Is there anywhere else I should be looking?

Lancashire / William Henry Lee b. Manchester c.1859 (but to whom...?)

Hello Lancashire Rootschatters

My first post here... I'm having some difficulty tracing the parents of my 2x Great Grandfather, William Henry Lee, born in Manchester c.1859.

I'd really appreciate any assistance or suggestions... or some fresh eyes  :)

The first real evidence I have of his existence is on his 1883 marriage certificate... prior to that, there's many a William Lee to choose from, with none leaping out as the right one.

I've gathered a fair amount of info from his marriage, until his death in 1944.  Here's what I know...

Marriage:
St. Andrew, Ancoats
1 September 1883
William Henry Lee to Sarah Ann Addy
Age: 24
Condition: Bachelor
Rank or Profession: Sawyer
Residence: 31 Kirk Street  Junction Street  Every Street (3 streets written as a list on the cert)
Father: William Henry Lee (deceased)
Rank or Profession of Father:  Boiler maker
Witnesses:  Henry & Emily Hudson

They lived in Ancoats for a good while:
1891 Census:  37 Congou Street (age 31 – b. Manchester)
1901 Census:  12 Caledon Street (age 41 – b. Manchester)
1911 Census:  11 Brown Street (age 51 – b. Manchester)

Children:
(Baptised St Andrew, Ancoats)
1884 George
1886 William Henry
1888 James
1890 Hannah
1892 Mary
(Baptised All Souls, Ancoats)
1894 Samuel
1896 Daniel
1898 Sarah Ann & Bella (twins)
1900 Arthur
1905 Joseph

Death Certificate:
9 February 1944
3 St Oswald’s Road, Levenshulme M.D.
William Henry Lee
84 years
Retired Storekeeper – Railway

Buried Southern Cemetery – grave 1286 - with wife Sarah Ann & daughter + son-in-law

But, I'm no wiser on his birth.  Are there any docs that a birth date, or mother's maiden name would appear on?  We're spoiled in Australia, with marriage & death certificates recording mother's details.

Tallying all the dates, I've been concentrating on births between April 1859 and February 1860 (but also searching a couple of years each side).  I've purchased 3 birth certificates, and discounted one.

Not this William (he's still living with parents on 1891 census and beyond)
1 August 1859
William Lee
Duke Street
To William and Lucy (nee Massey) Lee
Father’s Occupation: Overlooker in a silk mill

Maybe this William (Mum's a widow in 1881... but there's a 'Newton Heath' born William in later censuses that fits better)
22 June 1859
William Lee
Church Street, Newton
To William and Martha (nee Ogden) Lee
Father’s Occupation: Labourer at Starch Works

Maybe... but I can't find any further info on this William:
2 November 1859
William Lee
Workhouse, Newbridge Street
To Elizabeth Lee

There's a William Lee in the 1881 census, with parents recorded as William & Isabella (but father is recorded as "Joseph Lee" in previous censuses).  No trace of either in later censuses - younger children living with uncle in 1891.

Apologies for the ginormous post - I wanted to get all the facts in - and thanks for getting this far down the page ;D

Emma

P.S. The Lee family is one of 21 direct line Lancashire surnames (courtesy of 2 sets of Great Grandparents immigrating to Oz) that I've been researching, but they have given me the most grief, LOL.
