Armed Forces / Re: Identify this uniform
« on: Thursday 26 November 20 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for the replies. I am actually trying to track down my 3x g grandmother Eleanor Holland who was born between 1799 to 1805. My first "sight" of her is a mention in a diary of 1823, but first official record, the birth of her first son in 1826, (3 years before her marriage). I was hoping that identifying the brother might help. The army roll names were helpful, thank you.

This is Captain Holland, brother to my 4xg grandmother. Is there any way of identifying and dating this uniform, which might help me find out his first name and therefore locate his family?

I have had another look Thomas Clarke's will and there is no mention of a Ward.

Hi,
Thank you for reading and replying to my post. The photographic studio is Alexander Bassano of Bond Street and Piccadilly which, according to Wikipedia, wasn't at Bond Street until 1877. The guardian was Thomas Clarke (1845-1904) Maltster of Derby. I attach both photographs, though I don't really know if this helps. It would be nice to put a name to person in the  photographs (which was the  original motivation for my research).

Hi, Is it possible to identify the name of a Ward of Court if the only information you have is the name and identity of the guardian? (And a photograph of the child with studio information of the reverse).

Hi again,

With all your information I was able to locate the original advertisement in the Belfast Newsletter, (I had findmy past credits to use up)  which boasts
"the healthy climate is particularly suited for delicate boys" !

Great sleuthing!

I have just looked at all the PRONI photos on flickr and it is undoubtedly Mourne Grange School. I now have a starting point for research. I hope this will also help anyone else who has relatives in the photo. The names are a great bonus.

Antrim / "Rossel House" School Photograph

Hi
Can anyone help identify the school from this photograph? I estimate the date to be between 1918 and 1921. The photographer is Allison & Co. My Grandfather (Alexander in the photograph) was from Belfast but may have been sent away to board. His family were Presbyterian.

Thank you
