Hi Janis
The Andrew I am looking for was a brick maker but my father's family were also Romany gypsies although I have yet to find a document as proof (from my gradfather's side of the family ..that is ) dad and his family always claimed to be 100% Romany and dad was actually the 7th son of the 7th son which means that the person is supposed to have certain powers (he could read Palm's tell fortune's read tea leaves and tell you the meanings of dreams ) I do know for certain that his mother Carnation Wharton/Whiston/Warton (born 1878 Sheriff hill Gateshead ) was from a very long line of Romany Gypsies so it must be true I have came across the name Smails on one of The Romany, site but without proof in front of me I cannot swear it as true (although if dad could read what I have just wrote he wouldn't be very happy with me for doubting him)  I know dads father was a tin smith and would travel around with his horse & wagon selling his wares.

                                 Thanks
                                    Tom

Hi Janis
Thanks for replying funnily enough I have been torn between Smales/Smails for a good while' especially when you know that it really just depended on how the person (doing the census notes ) heard the name and how they would spell names on the forms, my grandmothers family Wharton was wrote as either Whiston/Warton/Werton in various records through history. But I have thought  about Elizabeth crosier & William Smales they acutually stand out for some reason maybe it's because I have came across some of my family who did also emmigrate to Canada later in the 1900's  ' but the spelling of the name is still something I need to verify

Hi Carolew
               Thanks for the reply
I don't know why I didn't think of doing myself that in the first place (I blame the medication) it's plain & simple (just like me )
                        Thank you

Hi Lindyloowho
Sorry to bother you again (so soon I just sent you a message 10 minutes ago) as I mentioned my ggg grandparents were Andrew Smiles & Ann Dawson could you tell me if the Smiles's of Newcastle were all part of the same clan please.  Do you know if Andrew had any brothers & sisters please although guess work I  have 3 brothers  who although unsure I have Robert born 1799' John 1800' and William 1821 . I am at a bit of a loss as I lost all contact with dads side of the family after moving in & out of the area quite a few times myself once married (mainly due to work) plus dad( John Smiles born 1909 Southwick Durham) died in 1985 . My mother was from Cumbria and when she married dad in the 1950's  my grandparents were no longer around so the only family members she  knew of his brothers & sisters.

PS you wouldn't happen to know if Andrew (1803 Felton) mother's maiden name could of been Crosier as I came across a Robert Crosier Smiles (born Longframlington in 1799 )
                                                Thanks
                                                  Tom

Hi my my ggg grandpatents were John Warton (born 1770  Sussex) and Fanny Stanley (born 1773 Bristol) I believe they had 7 children the second child born was my gg grandparent Gilderoy Wharton/Whiston , he later  married my gg grandmother who was  Mary (Christmas) Lee they had 11 children the 10th child being my g grandfather Stephen (born 1839 Ryhope Durham) he married my g grandmother Margery/ Margerum the problem is I cannot find her maiden name although it has been suggested it was either Lee or Kelly ' I was wondering if anyone could help me with her maiden name please ??? I would also be very greatfull if any other users (with family connections)have any photo's of my family members which they would be willing to share as I have none whatsoever ( mainly due to a (known) thief in 1936 ! >:( ) Although I did recently manage to find a photo of my g uncle Meachic Wharton (born 1874 Sheriff Hill Gateshead) on the internet

                                                 Thanks
