Cornwall / Re: Joseph Catherine (Also spelt Cathrine, Catharine)

Thanks Claire, i found how to use that website afterwards and got the same results as you.
It seems like it is likely to be the same person going by age. I can see how the name would go from Cattran/Cottran to Catherine/Cathrine as they could sound similar.

Cornwall / Joseph Catherine (Also spelt Cathrine, Catharine)
« on: Sunday 29 May 16 20:42 BST (UK)  »
Good Evening,

I have recently found a Royal Marine record for my 5 x Great Grandfather which states he was born 1781 approx in Newlin, Cornwall (He lived in Chatham and Plymouth with Royal Marines who he had joined about 1798), Then in 1846 shortly before he was moved to the Greenwich Hospital he stated his address a Mount Bay, Cornwall. I have found a Newlyn near Mounts Bay which didn't have a church in the time Joseph was born and i have found some information which says people would travel to Paul to attend church. I have had a look on FreeReg to see if there are any Jospeh Catherine's born around the time and the nearest one i come up with is Joseph Cottran/Cattran bastard son of Mary Cottran/Cattran baptised/christened in St Pol de Leon, Paul, Cornwall on 17 Mar 1782.

Is there anyone on here who has either family names in the Paul/Newlyn area who may be able to help me with this? I am in Surrey so travelling to Truro to look at the records isn't an option unfortunately with a young family.

Thank you in advance for any help

Emma

Thanks Jennifer C. I have the baptism's for the children but i've never found a marriage or baptism for either parents. It took me a long time to find Hannah's death as it was spelt differently. It's one of those brick walls that drive you up the wall

Kent / William Caress
« on: Thursday 11 December 14 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I wondered if anyone has any information about William Caress born about 1778 died 1838 (buried Chatham St Mary, 30 Dec 1838) married Hannah unknown about 1778-28 Feb 1850 in Workhouse (buried Chatham St Mary 5 Mar 1850) . They had 8 children Thomas 1808, Samuel 1810-1810, John 1812, Mary Elizabeth 1815-1892 & Rebecca Martha 1815(Twins), Eliza 1817 and Jane 1820 & Sarah 1820 (twins). I have come to a complete halt with them. I cant find any marriage between them the time before the children were born. It doesn't help that Caress can be transcribed incorrectly or was spelt differently at the time.
On the 1841 census Hannah says she was born in the County of Kent but this could be wrong. I have Hannah's death certificate but it unfortunately doesn't list her maiden name.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Roscommon / Re: Kelly/Kelley's of Mahon Estate, Strokestown, Roscommon
« on: Friday 31 October 14 08:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Janine,

Thanks for that information. Sorry I think I mis-typed what I was looking for. I have them while in England but don't know anything about them while in Ireland. They came over her in 1846-7.

I'm mainly looking for baptism/dob for James approx. 1804, Laughlin approx. 1806 and any other siblings they had.
Then the information on their parents, which on the marriage record for Laughlin says father Patrick.
Then i'm looking for the marriage of James to Jane so I can find out Jane's details. They must have been married before 1828 in Ireland as that's the date of their first child. I'm going to see if I can get the Tynemouth Workhouse records for Jane as that is where she was in 1881 and then she died in 1882 so hopefully one of those will give me some information on her dob or maiden name.

Also does anyone know if the name Lauritius (poss spelt different) is just Lawrence of if it could also have been Laughlin

Thanks

Emma

Roscommon / Kelly/Kelley's of Mahon Estate, Strokestown, Roscommon
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 18:40 GMT (UK)  »

Hi,

I'm trying to trace my 4 x great grandfathers James Kelly. He was born in approximately 1804 Roscommon and married Jane Unknown. They had 4 children I know of Margaret born around 1828, Patrick around 1830 (my 3 x great grandfather), Mary around 1838 and Bridget around 1840 all born in Roscommon, I think there may have been more children who possibly died as there is quite a large gap.
James also had a brother who came to England with him called Laughlin/ Lockland who was born about 1806 and on his marriage record in 1852 it states his father as being Patrick Kelley.

I have been told the following about Patrick Kelly (1830 - 1893) and his parents were among 3600 tenants evicted from the Mahon Estate at Strokestown in Roscommon in 1847. This led to Bishop Browne of Elphin writing an open letter of denunciation to the Earl of Salisbury which was published in the Freeman's Journal on 29th April 1848. Patrick's family is listed in this letter, a copy of which is displayed in the Famine Museum at Strokestown. Patrick settled in North Shields, learned the trade of a boot and shoe maker, and married Frances Davis (1830 - 1902), with whom he had 14 children. In 1851 he opened a shop at Clive Street, North Shields, and as the business expanded opened further premises, including a shop in Market Square, Jarrow.

I would be very grateful if anyone knows any information (ie baptisms, marriages and deaths etc while in Ireland) about Patrick his wife, James, Laughlin and any other siblings they had.

Thank you in advance

Hi Ann,

If your not to busy would there be any chance you can find any of the below (please don't feel you need to search for all as this would be classed as taking the mickey!)

William Hamilton b1792 wife Barbara Hamilton nee Smellie b 1793 (married 1812 Cambusnethan, both died after 1834)
William Hamilton b1747 wife Elisabeth Hamilton nee Bell b1753 (married before 1782 both died after 1791)
John Hamilton nothing known wife Jean Hamilton nee Millar nothing known (married before 1747)
Robert Smellie b 23 June 1751 wife Frances Smellie nee Fleeming nothing known about her (married before 1787, both died after 1801)
John Bell nothing known wife Jean Bell nee Bell nothing known (married 1751 Dalserf)

Like I said above please do not feel you need to look for all, I've listed them as you may recognise a name.

Thanks in advance.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Huntrod/Huntrods/Huntrode/Huntrodes
« on: Tuesday 29 October 13 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
Morning,

I am trying to find out anything about my 8 x great grandfather William Huntrods who died in 1682 Fylingdales, near Whitby. He was father to Anna 1675-1679, William 1677-1679, Martha (my 7 x great grandmother) 1681-1747 and William 1682-????.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on William and if he is the son or grandson (or any other relation) of the famous Francis and Mary Huntrodds who's tomb is at St Mary's Church, Whitby. Looking through other peoples trees on Ancestry some people list them as having a son called William born around 1630, but I do not have anything to say the Williams are the same person.

Any info anyone can give I would be very grateful for.
