Armed Forces / Seaforth Highlander Missing in the 1891 Census
« on: Tuesday 17 September 13 02:48 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to track down my wife's great grandfather, Henry Smith Flett.

He was born in Orkney in 1871.
In 1901, he is on the census as a postman in Edinburgh. I have records that show he started with the Post Office in 1896.
In 1912, he left Scotland for Canada and subsequently signed up with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 and fought in France (aged 44 +)

On his Canadian sign up papers, he states he served 12 years with the Seaforth Highlanders. I have been advised that it is possible that he did 7 years full service, and then a further 5 years as a reservist, whilst having a full time job with the PO.

This would mean he was possibly with the Seaforths from 1889 to 1896.

I haven't been able find any records of him in that period and was wondering if anyone had ideas of where else to look ?

Thanks

Caithness / Nicolsons Olrig 1850->
« on: Sunday 03 June 12 01:41 BST (UK)  »
I wondering if anyone has any knowledge, links or relationships with the Nicolson family from Olrig Parish in Caithness.

My connection is through my grandmother, Annie Duncan(nee Nicolson) (1895-1962).  She married my granddad, William Stephen Duncan in 1932 and I believe they lived at Taymount Cottage in Castletown .

Any help or advice gratefully received.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Aberdeenshire Newspaper Clippings

Stumbled across this old post and wondered if Kirsty was still active on here.

I'm very interested in learning if there any mentions of the Duncans in your clippings.

My family worked at the Hatton Estates, Turriff for many, many years, as Gamekeeper, general labourers and domestic servants.
They were all from King Edward(early gens) or born on the Estate.

Alexander (4 generations of), Isabella, George, John.

thanks

Brother is shortened version of Alexander.

That would tie in with a tree that gives his brothers as Alexander, James, Peter and Robert (and a half brother also called Alexander)

Thanks, I did wonder if it was Alexr, as that it how they have filled in at least one of the census forms.

Where did you find a tree with a half brother Alexander ?

I have the family tree and have George with older brothers Alexander and John , older sister May, and younger brothers James, Peter and Robert, with younger sisters Isabella and Elizabeth .

Please see attached death certificate for my great, great uncle, George Duncan.
I have 3 queries.

1.  What does it say in the far left margin before  " Page 46 15 Feb 1904"?

2.  Does anyone know what it refers to ?

3.  Can anyone make out the name of the brother who informed of the death,in Column 7?

Thanks for looking .
