Norfolk / Re: Barnardo's Children in Diss, Norfolk - Gladys Nicholson
« on: Tuesday 11 February 25 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks everyone for your replies and thoughts on Gladys. I cannot be positive that she is the Gladys E B G Nicholson referred to earlier. However I have found out quite a lot about the other 5 Diss Barnardo's children so I'm going to move on. Thanks again.

Gladys Nicholson is on the 1911 Census in Diss Norfolk: RG14 PN11443 RD230 SD2 ED1 SN161. She is listed as a Barnardo's Child so will not be with her family.

Thanks both for the replies. I have just been throught the info above. I don't think Gladys Eva is the same person but will keep this in mind. Would a solicitor's clerk have a daughter taken into a Barnardo's Home?

Norfolk / Barnardo's Children in Diss, Norfolk - Gladys Nicholson
« on: Wednesday 29 January 25 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find background information on children who were listed as being Barnardo's Children and living in Diss at the time of the 1911 Census. There were six listed but one, a Gladys Nicholson, born 1898 in Clapham London, is a mystery to me. If anyone can offer any help in finding out about Gladys, or point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Charles Smith and Clara .....

I think it is certain now which Clara married Charles and has allowed me to go a lot further with this family line.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Thanks for this. It seems strange that the marriage was in Thanet - perhaps she was in service around there. Also a problem in as much as I think Clara was born in Saxlingham near to Tharston; there are two Clara Wisemans, b. 1845 and 1847. Looking at the dates probably the one born in 1845.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Charles Smith and Clara .....
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
Charles Smith was born ~1847 (1847 Q2 Depwade 13 46), baptised in Tharston, Norfolk on 25 Nov 1847 and was single and living with his parents in Tharston at the time of the 1871 Census (RG10 1836 161 17), a blacksmith aged 23.

Charles married Alice Maria Rushmore on 19 Oct 1880 in Tharston.

The 1881 Census (RG11 1969 57 16) had Charles (blacksmith) living in Tharston with wife Alice Maria and daughter Ellen J (born 1873).

An Ellen Jane Smith was baptised on 27 May 1877 in Tharston and gave a birth date as 11 Sept 1872, with parents Charles (blacksmith) and Clara.

A Clara Smith died in 1879, buried in Tharston St. Mary's Church on 11 July 1879, memorial in the churchyard 'IN MEMORY OF CLARA BELOVED WIFE OF CHARLES SMITH WHO DIED JULY 7TH 1879 AGED 34 YEARS WHEN WE ASUNDER PART .....', so Clara was born ~1845 and possibly at some point between 1871 and 1879 had married Charles.

Hopefully someone can help me to find the Clara mentioned above. I have searched for a marriage between Charles and Clara in the appropriate period but can get nowhere. Also tried to find any Clara, local to Tharston, who would fit the description.

Thanks in anticipation.

I have a James Harvey born in Tharston in 1811 but I do not think that he is your convict - he was still in Tharston in 1851. Enclosed is the story so far .....

I have just looked at all the parish records we have from the relevant period and can find no possible connection between your James an any of our Harveys.

As you know I am trying to create a 'family tree' of Tharston and, when I've completed the current family under research, the Bensleys, I'll have a look at the Harveys and let you know if I find anything interesting.

Just a quick thought - there are several villages around here with very similar names, are you sure it is Tharston as there are Starston, Thuston, Stuston to name but three, and I have often found people have confused these both in transcriptions and on original documents.

I hope you have a good trip when you visit us and, should the Tharston contact be fruitful, we would be pleased to meet you in our village.

Regards.  Nigel
