We can help with your LAWS research, we cover McLAWS but as yet have never linked the two families so would be great to hear from you.
Regarding the Tartan I am advised by Bob McLaren of Clan Mclaren Society of North America that the clan claim LAWS as a sept of the clan.
I as registrar of the LAWS FAMILY REGISTER have joined the Clan McLaren Society in Scotland, and will advise whether we may use the Clan McLaren tartan

Laws Family Register
This One-Name Study came into being during 1974 as a result of a Brick Wall and my attempt to circumvent the wall by going round it. 40 years of research has not as yet, made any substantial breach, but has extended my knowledge of this family and its variants.
To date we have collected 65958 People, as part of 19325 Families, having had 153269 Events, in 31875 Places, over a 400 year time-span, across the english speaking world, and in a few cases well beyond.
Variants
This study is primarily LAWS, together with the LAWES, LAWSE as variants. Our database has a great many LAW, but we have ceased including them in our study
Origin of the surname
These names are mostly to be found in the United Kingdsom of Great Britain, but instances have been found in most european countries but with a greater emphasis on Scandinavia.
Distribution of the name can be found all across Western Europe, Australisia, the Pacific Islands and North America.
As yet no personal DNA project has been undertaken, though The Clan Maclaren Society of North America has intiated a project, they include LAW & LAWS as septs of the Clan.
