Cheers for the reply.

According to the Clan MacTavish site http://www.clanmactavish.org Clan MacTavish is an ancient highland clan, and also that the name Thom(p)son is actually MacTavish http://www.clanmactavish.org/MacTavishisThompson.php & also http://mysite.verizon.net/resrz8zf/clanmactavishseannachie/id38.html where one finds the names MacTavish & Thomson were interchangeable as aliases or 'shadow names'.

At this stage I've traced my line back to Clackmannan(shire) which puts it in the vicinity of Clan MacThomas so I'm leaning towards being descended from Clan MacThomas... but I'd really like to find out for sure.

The quest continues.  :)

Clackmannanshire / John Thomson (born circa 1797)

Hi there,

I've hit the proverbial brick wall in tracing my patrilineal line and am thus hoping for a breakthrough on these forums. I'm not even sure which clan I'm linked to: MacThomas or MacTavish?

I've managed to trace my line back to my great x 3 grandfather John Thomson who was born circa 1797 in Clackmannan(shire). He married Christian Miller on December 10 1820 in Clackmannan(shire). Their children included Gavin, James, John Jnr, Mary, William, & Robert. Robert (my great x 2 grandfather) emigrated to New Zealand in 1859.

I'd like to trace my line further back if I can and find out the names of John Thomson's parents.

Any and all assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
