Thank you to all of you sending me information. I would love to find even more about this man who was so heavily cross examined at the Inquest.  Maybe back to the archive papers. the info you have sent will help that search. Grateful. Nx  :)

Family History Beginners Board / William John, Fireman at Lan Colliery 1875
« on: Tuesday 01 April 25 15:29 BST (UK)  »
From time to time, researchers have helped me track the people involved in the 1875 Lan Colliery Disaster. While I have also found a lot of information, I cannot trace WILLIAM JOHN. The only sound fact I have is that he was fireman at the time of the Lan disaster and faced heavy questioning at the Inquest, which  I have researched in detail from archive papers.

Can anyone trace William John with so little information?  You all have infinite skills that I don't have. He could have lived in Gwaelod  y Garth - Lower Pentyrch, Pentyrch,Taffs Well or Tongwnlais. Please help if you can.

Thank you.

Glamorganshire / TW Booker Iron and Coal Master
« on: Sunday 30 June 24 13:18 BST (UK)  »
Good morning. Researchers  on this page have helped me (for my history group) several times. We are still trying to research more fully the Booker family. We have some notes on the history of TW Booker Blakemore and TW Booker of Velindre. The latter was bankrupt around the time of the death of his first born son in 1875. Archive press covers the bankruptcy and court hearings extensively.

What we are trying to do is find out more of this family, trying to understand why these important coal barons have so little written about them. We know the eight daughters and the wife of TWBooker of Velindre were involved at Tuskar House helping wounded soldiers recoup. We know one daughter was buried with full military honours having served at the front, but have no idea what happened to the family after this period. Are there living relatives? Are there any photos of anyone from this important family? Even the portrait of TWBooker Blakemore, which hung in the City Hall, has disappeared. Please help if you can! History will be grateful. Thank you so much.

Yes. I do know this site. It was run by a friend. I’m not sure it does individual people. Does it? Thanks.

Wales Resources / William John Fireman at Lan Colliery Lower Pentyrch 1875

Over the past months have recreated the Inquiry into the 1875 Lan Colliery disaster. The actual records are lost. Luckily, archived newspaper of the day give near verbatim reports of proceedings so through detailed reading, this research was possible.

One man is particularly interesting. Fireman William John. He is recalled to give evidence several times, told his job is on the line. He gives evidence against Abraham Phillips, the overman.

Now my question. I know nothing about William John beyond the fact he was fireman at Lan Colliery and he wasn’t underground at the time of the explosion, and that he hadn’t entered gas in the record book.

Is There any possibility of tracing a person with so little information? William John. fireman Lan Colliery. 1875. Probably lived in Lower Pentyrch, Gwaelod y Garth, or Taffs Well.

Any ideas welcomed! Thanks so much. :)

Thanks for that! A bit remiss for a judge and solicitor!  But from the archived paper report it is clear his death was sudden and unexpected. Again, thanks. All so interesting. Nx

Rootschat researchers are incredible. It's a national treasure! History will be as grateful as I am right now. Thank you. Norma

The news report of his death is so helpful. Many thanks for that. I have searched so many archive papers and missed that one - the most important of all. :)
