Technical Help / Re: Issue with Editing Search information on Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 26 March 25 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
I usually input in lower case. It saves a lot of keystrokes when you've got dodgy hands.
I've raised this issue at Ancestry have spoken to a real person, after giving the chatbot a run around (name of  Leif. how nice  ;D). Eventually the chatbot just said "I can't help" and gave me a freephone number to ring. When I rang it I had 2 options - subscription queries or DNA queries. I've had this kind of thing before - no option for what you're after so they expect you to give up. I went through to subscriptions and got a man who was obviously a technical guy as he asked me what the issue was. I explained the issue, including the fact that I'd done the all troubleshooting they'd suggested except changed my browser. He accessed my account and found no issues at his end. He asked if I'd tried on another device, (smart phone or laptop). I've tried both and everything works OK (Laptop is Windows 11) but I can't use that all the time and I will not change browser to the one they recommend (Chrome). I hate being coerced into going to Google for everything. I'll have to wait till I can use my son's laptop to see if the edit search facility works OK on that. After that I'll get back to Ancestry (I have a case number).
If everyone has tried the troubleshooting suggested by Ancestry and still have the issue I suggest you contact Ancestry as well. The more instances they get the more likely they'll be to take notice of us.

Technical Help / Re: Issue with Editing Search information on Ancestry

Thanks everyone. I've tried all your ideas and some work but not all the time. It is too frustrating for words. AS the problems seem be occur across all platforms I think the fault must lie with Ancestry. I'll try and raise it as an issue but I won't hold my breath. I've raised things with Ancestry before and not received a reply.
Thanks again everyone ???

Technical Help / Issue with Editing Search information on Ancestry
« on: Monday 24 March 25 11:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Pc with Windows 10 and Edge. When I go to the home page on Ancestry and do a search I get the results I want but when I try to edit the search using the (pencil) Edit search, for example to change a maiden name to a married name, it won't let me change anything. i can input a couple of letters then it reverts to what was originally input. My only option is to create a new search from scratch, which is most annoying.
Does anyone know if it's likely to be my PC or whether it's an Ancestry fault.
Hoping someone knows
Thanks

Dorset / William Budden (1744)
« on: Monday 30 March 20 11:49 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for a marriage for a William Budden (born 1744) in Dorset after finding a gravestone  image showing that he had a second wife Susanna. I did a search using the card catalogue set to Dorset marriages (see attachment) It returned 2 documents for the marriage. With the difference in dates I thought one would be the banns and the later one the marriage, but on opening them I found they both were for a marriage. I have found 2 records before in different formats for the same person, but the dates have always matched.
Is this just an error, perhaps a deferment of the marriage or is the earlier one in fact the banns.
Any help would be appreciated.

World War One / Re: RN deaths

Thanks for replying so quickly.
Tony
I did look at the log for the ship, but I looked closer to the date of his death, where I thought it might have been mentioned. I didn't think to look further back to see what had happened to him as I thought he might have died as result of an accident or the like, on board. Thanks for the info.
Ruth
Thanks for the info on cause of death

World War One / RN deaths
« on: Saturday 13 July 19 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I have recently found a death for one of my relatives. He was on the HMS Princess Royal and died on 7 August 1915. The CWGC site gives no details but I found another naval death list (attached) but am no closer to finding out how he died. His death (under Cause) is listed a 3, but I have searched in vain for what this means. From other similar documents I don't believe he was killed in action. Can anyone enlighten me as to what the numbers on the attached document mean.

Hi everyone

I've now received the marriage cert for Harry Steel and Louisa Woodford and it confirms that Harry Steel is the right man. On the cert his father is Charles, a gardener, which matches the information that I have on him.

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone for your input.
I have requested a copy of the marriage of Harry Steel to Louisa Woodford as along with you all I believe that is probably the right marriage. I'll let you know if we're right.
I've found the newspaper articles about the death of the child so I'll read them shortly.
Thanks again everyone for all your information.
