South Africa / Re: Looking for 2 lost ships 1826 & 1829
« on: Wednesday 02 May 18 14:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi Carl,

Thank you for your post. Have you got more information about the Harmony? Her loss? Her captain? Everything about this wreck could be helpful for me, because my ancestor was her captain, but for now, he is very unknown. I always look for his birthplace and the year he was born, but it's very difficult (I'm living in France, so far away from Knysna, Cape and South African coasts!)

Regards.

Hello everybody,

Thanks to you, I found this collection in Hathi Trust, but why there is any shipping intelligence into 1828's one?

http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/007882620?type[]=subject&lookfor[]=%22%20Almanacs%2C%20South%20African.%22&filter[]=topicStr%3AAlmanacs%2C%20South%20African&ft=

Is there a complete version of the 1828' Calendar?
Thank you very much.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Re: What could be this first name?

Thank you, I think exactly the same thing about this : It seems to be Richard, but I would like to be sure it could not be Robert... and for the last letters, I think it could be 'Jr' for Junior.

It's a letter from 1826, and I don't know if it's common at this period to write 'Jr'.

And I've got this other one from 1827. For me, it could be the writting of the same person, but could you tell me what you think about this? But now, there are no 'Jr'...

FH Documents and Artefacts / What could be this first name?

Hello,

Could you help to identify this writting ? The initial seems to be an "R" and it seems to have some letters after the name. I've got an idea about this, but I want to be sure, so I ask you some help to identify this first name and these last letters after the name.

Thank you in advance.

So, the first one is not the good one, but the second is "my one"!
Thank you. :)

Hello, thank you for answer,

In fact, I'm trying to find every information about the brig "Thomas" which sailed circa 1826-1829 in South African, because I know that ship was under captain Butler's command and he could be one of my ancestors.

On Lloyd's list (online : cityoflondon website), some information about Thomas don't mention the name of the captain, so I need to know where she was to be sure she's the good ship.

Thank you for your answer. :)

I always found these advertisements from Public Ledger last week on FindMyPast too.
I'm now trying to prove that there is only one captain for all these ships. The name seems similar and he used to go in the same area (Cape Town, Knysna, Algoa Bay), but in the same time Butler is a very common name.

It's difficult, because, online, I can't read all the newspapers I would like (Cape Town Gazette & African Advertiser, South African Commercial Advertiser...) and I'm living too far from Libraries where I could find them.

Fortunetaly, I find some help from each side of the world with volunteers, here and in others places. So thank you for all! :)

Hello,

I think (and I hope!!) could be Richard Butler, a mariner who lived in Cape Town between 1820 and 1829.

I think he was the same R. Butler who was captain of the brig Thomas in 1826 (lost between Algoa Bay and Table Bay in march, 1829), and perhaps the same who was captain of the Harmony in 1825-1826 (wrecked in Knysna in 1826)

Thank you very much if you could help me! :)
