Australia / Re: ss OSTERLEY - complete passenger list wanted
« on: Sunday 27 May 12 10:15 BST (UK)  »
Thankyou all for your help :)

I knew it was a long shot that someone else may already have the complete list (well the Fremantle disembarkments anyway).

There is limited online acess to those years here and Perth is a very long way away so i was being impatient! lol I'm sure a phone call tomorrow and i should be able to order it.

Yes she did arrive here on the Osterley , along with 44 other "domestics" - they arrived in Fremantle, November 1912 and there was a newspaper article stating that 45 domestics were arriving and would be available for engagement from Immigration Home, Fremantle on Wednesday afternoon November 13.

Her parents and the rest of the family emigrated the following year.

What a brave young woman my great grandmother was!

The thing is i have this very old, very badly damaged photo that was addressed on the back to her parents back in Edinburgh. We never knew who or what the photo was of. However, now knowing she arrived with 44 other domestics i am making an educated guess!

Its a very formal group photo - two older ladies seated , one man at the side and ......45 smartly dressed young women - all in white blouses and wearing small rosette like ribbons on their chests. I'm betting it was taken either before they left for Australia - or on arrival here in Fremantle in 1912.

This is why i was interested to know of the other passengers names (they may be in the photo) and also to work out whether she may or may not have met her future husband on that same ship!!

Hahahha - its all interesting guess work until proven :)

Many thanks again for your replies

Australia / ss OSTERLEY - complete passenger list wanted
« on: Saturday 26 May 12 12:23 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone has access to the complete passenger list for the ss OSTERLEY departing London on 11 Oct 1912 and arriving Fremantle, Western Australia November 1912.

In another post - cando replied to dimply with information on a Margaret Fettes arriving on this ship (she was my ggm)

Thankyou so much for this information cando - after reading that post i managed to find the notice of that ships arrival in Fremantle on trove.

The heading in the West Australia Sat 9 November 1912 - was IMMIGRANT DOMESTICS. Apparently 45 domestics arrived on that ship and were available for engagement thru Immigration Home, South Terrace, Fremantle.

I have an old photograph that was taken in Scotland and addressed to my Margaret Fettes' mother in Stockbridge, Scotland and its a very formal affair showing 2 quite stern elderly ladies, one man AND co-incidently 45 young women all with little rosette type badges on!!

I may be totally on the wrong track but i was thinking maybe these were the 45 women who were about to depart to a new life in Australia??

I have had no success trying to find passenger lists online for this era - hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Unfortunately Battye library is a good 7 hour drive away from here !! lol

As i am new to this forum - please let me know if i have heade this correctly or if its in the wrong section. I did check other look-ups prior to posting.

Cheers

Thankyou once again for you help ev - much appreciated!

Now off to see if this daughter Janet married a Grant!! I still have a feeling that little Margaret may have something to do with it all seeing as she was still the only one on the census when John grant Robertson was 12 and at home with the grandparents ;)

Thankyou so much for your info ev !

Hmm well this makes things interesting doesnt it?

If Janet Robertson is listed as the mother on the birth certificate (she would've been 51 when she had him) and he is listed as being the grandchild in the 1871 census. (assuming he is the same person)

Seems strange that Margaret is still living at Ballendrick Cottage in 1881 with the now named John Grant Robertson. Their ages match up. She was 29 and still living at home presumably unmarried? I would hazard a guess she is the mother but of course all is unproven as yet.

On that 1881 census did it have relationship status ev? this time its John Robertson not James and a slight age difference - although  Janet seems to match tho.

My John Grant was apparently a well educated man and a Stone mason by trade. He always insisted he was born at/in Kilgraston (which i have since learned is a stonesthrow from Dunbarney and also a reknowned Grant residence)

I couldn't find James and Janet Robertson together on the 1861 census either but i think that would take forever and when i collect enough starting info i think its time to bite the bullet and join Scotlands People!! lol

Seems like name changes were a common thing back in those days (much to our dismay)

Thankyou again for your help ev and if anything else pops up would appreciate your posts

Cheers

Perthshire / ROBERTSON - GRANT connection Dunbarney
« on: Monday 21 May 12 18:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi all - have recently restarted a long lost passion(addiction lol) for discovering our family history  :D

My GGF JOHN GRANT has been a real bug bear to trace so i was delighted to finally "find" him a few weeks ago in the Scottish 1871 census.

As I am in Australia it has been a huge help having the census data online now.

Anyway this is the info that was listed:

Registration District - Dunbarney    Address  -  Ballendrick, Dunbarney         County - Perthshire

Piece 347     Foilio 4     Page 2    Civil Parish Dunbarney

James Robertson -        Overseer              Head           Married     Male       53      DOB 1818     Born Dunbarney, Perthshire

Janet Robertson -         Overseers wife     Wife            Married     F             57              1814              Forteviot, Perthshire

Margaret Robertson -   Dressmaker          Daughter       u/m        F             20               1851             Dunbarney

James Robertson -                                    Son                u/m        M             17              1854             Dunbarney

John Grant                                                Grandchild                    M              2               1869             Dunbarney

Given the ages of James and Janet - I am sure they had other older children that were not living at home, however I ran out of credits (lots of them) before managing to find them anywhere on the 1861, 1851 or 1881 censuses.

I am 99.9% certain this John Grant is the right one. The location is exact to what i already know and the name Robertson does run in the family (good old Scottish naming lol) I'm assuming he was the son of an older daughter who married a Grant or could poor little Margaret the dressmaker be his unmarried mother? If so why give him the name Grant?

There was a rumour gleaned from old John before he died to my grandmother  that he was perhaps an illegitimate child.

He married Elizabeth Ross in Dunfermline in 1892 and they emigrated to Australia in 1912 with their 4 children.

I have no idea if John Grant had any siblings - as far as i know he was an only child.

Would really love to hear from anyone else researching this particular line of Robertsons (yes i know its such a common name as are James and Janet lol)

Thankyou for reading

Cheers

Hi Dimply :)

I realise its been a while since you posted this but heres hoping you see this.

We must be related but i cant quite work out how yet! lol

Charles Denton is also my GGrandfather. My GGMother being Margaret Elizabeth Fettes. They had 3 daughters. Pop Denton kept in touch with my Grandma after he remarried but we never had a lot to do with the Pilbeam side although one of her sisters did.

Seeing as you're also interested in the Fettes side i'm assuming you must be related to Isa or Doris??

Would love to hear from you. I have recently restarted on the Family Tree (caught the bug again) - its amazing how much more info is on the web compared to 10 years ago! This post popped up on a random google search so i HAD to join rootschat ;)

Would love to know where you fit in on this family line too befuddled !

Cheers
