The original Church was destroyed in the Clydebank blitz, further information can be got from the following webpage:

No old photo's unfortunately.  The Archivist for the Archdiocese of Glasgow may know if any exist, she can be contacted at 0141 226 5898.

Sorry Jim,

You are quite right, her name was Mary not Sarah, and we are talking about the same people.  I did not know about Agnes, only James Bernard, then William had another son with his second wife.

Sarah's aunt Elizabeth also married a Duffie and I wondered whether they were the same family, but never got around to checking.  Will get back to you on Saturday.

Liz

Hi

I am just answering this off the top of my head and I will have to go back to my records, but there must be a connection somewhere.  My ancestors were Spirit Merchants in Dumbarton, one Sarah Smith married Peter Kane and had 3 children, Peter, James and Sarah.  Both boys and her husband died before 1850, Sarah ran a boarding house in Dumbarton and Sarah her daughter married a William Duffie.  He went on to be a publican and died about 1929.  He had one son with Sarah before she died and he married someone else whose name escapes me.  I have not done a lot of research into Duffie as they were not my direct line, but between spirit merchants, Kane's and Duffie, its too much like a co-incidence.  I will not be able to look at my records until Saturday, but will get back to you.

The area of common ground is fairly well set out in Dumbarton Cemetery, and a number of my relatives are there also. I can take a picture for you if you wish.

does the 1863 death certificate not have place of burial on it.  I know they had in the 1850's, but I am not sure if it stopped by 1863.

Would the marraige certificate give any more information?  Brickwall's are really difficult to negotiate.  Our ancestors should have been more considerate!!

Hi

Renton is a village between Dumbarton and Alexandria.  In the early days everything West of the river Leven was under the registration district of Cardross.  This changed in the 1860, and the west-end of Dumbarton, on the other side of the Leven came under Dumbarton.  I think!!

The only way you can know for definate is to obtain Ellen's death certificate.  I believe there are some New York death certificates available on line sites.  If you are a member of Ancestry you could trace her on the American census.

I also have Jane McFarlane's in my list of ancestors, so will go and have a check on them.  Good Luck with your search.

Hi Nolocks,

I am not sure if you can help me but.  My grans sister was a boarded out farm worker from Lennox Castle.  She died on 23 February 1912.  The address given was Buchanan Street, Balfron.  I have checked with the cemeteries people at Stirling without any luck.  Would she be buried in Lennoxtown?
