Perthshire / Ritchie & Robertson families of Blair Atholl
« on: Tuesday 15 December 20 01:14 GMT (UK)  »
I live in New Zealand & for some years I have been researching my paternal 3xg grandmother, Jean RITCHIE (b.1809 Blair Atholl, Perthshire; d. Unknown date; m.1830 Perthshire Andrew BARCLAY (b.1788 Newburgh, Fife; d.1837 Balgonie, Abernethy, Perthshire).
It looks like Jean's parents were George RITCHIE & Janet ROBERTSON. I have no definitive birth or death dates for this couple but it appears that they m.1803 Blair Atholl, Perthshire.
I also cannot find Jean's death record. She is not mentioned in her husband, Andrew Barclay's will of 1837; 1841 their 2 daughters, Elisabeth BARCLAY (b. 1831 Abernethy, Perthshire) & Georgina BARCLAY (b. 1832 Auchtermuchty, Fife) are living with their step-siblings (from Andrew BARCLAY's 1st marriage), David BARCLAY & Janet BARCLAY at Balgonie, Abernethy, Perth. This would suggest that their mother was deceased or 'disappeared'? 1856 Jean is recorded as deceased on her daughter, Elisabeth's marriage certificate. Therefore she probably died between 1832-1841?
I have found a possible sibling for Jean, Alexander RITCHIE (b.1806 Blair Atholl) but his parents are George RITCHIE & Margaret (not Janet) ROBERTSON.
I would really appreciate it if anyone can suggest where/how I could find more info on the RITCHIE & ROBERTSON families of Blair Atholl.

Perthshire / Re: William McLaughlan
« on: Wednesday 01 November 17 04:43 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for your prompt replies. I am not certain that this William McLAUGHLAN tried in Perth is my man.... I'm just following up possibilities. Our William may not have been a convict but taking into account the time he was in Sydney, that he worked as a cooper for Johnny JONES, a well known NZ whaler who originated in Sydney, no marriage record found for he & Harriet, it's a possibility.
Our William McLAUGHLAN b. abt 1804 (per his age on his NZ Death Cert. Reg no 1884/1954.), no birth place; d. 2 Jun 1884, Waikouaiti, Otago, NZ. Unfortunately his death cert doesn't have any parents' names & only 'England' for place of birth... which may not be accurate. The Sydney records of his first 3 chn's births has Harriet as mother. I can't find a marriage or maiden name for Harriet in Sydney or NZ.
Their 4th child, William was b. 1846 in Waikouaiti, Otago, NZ. The subsequent chn were all born in NZ: Elizabeth b. abt 1851; James b. abt 1853; Eliza Christina b. 1858.(Sources: St John's Church, Waikouaiti, Baptism & Burial records).
So presumably they came to NZ between 3rd child, Mary Ann's birth 1841 in Sydney & 1846.
Harriet d. 24 Sep 1862 Waikouaiti, Otago, NZ (Source: NZ Death Cert. Reg no: 1861/2394... not sure why reg year is different from her actual death year).
So.... I'll follow up your links Rosinish. I did wonder if this convict William Mc LAUGHLAN's record may have related to Perth WA but I don't think it's likely. I gather that the Scottish Courts of Justiciary did a circuit to smaller towns & it seems as though anyone sentenced to transportation to Australia would appear before this High court. On William's death cert it has his wife as Margaret TURNER, suggesting he remarried after Harriet died in 1862... but I can't find a record for this marriage in NZ!
There's a very good book, 'Roadway to the Rushes' by Eileen Foote which is a history of the Waikouaiti area. William & Harriet McLAUGHLAN are both mentioned in this book. I have also read a biography of Johnny Jones & several other local histories. But still William McLAUGHLAN's origins are elusive!

Perthshire / William McLaughlan
« on: Tuesday 31 October 17 06:22 GMT (UK)  »
I live in New Zealand & I am attempting to find my husband's maternal gg grandfather, William Mc Laughlan's origins. William (b. abt 1804) & his 'wife', Harriet (b. abt 1812 but no maiden name or marriage found so far) had 3 chn in Sydney, NSW, Australia: John b.1836; John Thomas b.1838;Mary Ann b.1841.
William & Harriet came to Otago, NZ abt early 1840s to work at Johnny Jones' whaling station at Waikouaiti, Otago. William was a cooper. His surname is spelt a variety of ways in various documents...McLaughlin, McLoughlin, McLauchlan, McLachlan. This certainly complicates my research.
There are a number of William McLaughlans in NSW convict records. One seems a possibility: William McLaughlan; Arrived NSW: 1829; Tried at: Perth (Scotland?), District: Braidwood. It appears that William's trial was on 8 Sep 1828 at the Perth Courts of Justiciary. His sentence was 14 years.
Where/how can I find Perth Courts of Justiciary records?
I'd really appreciate it if someone could help.

Wales / Re: Welsh Emigration records
« on: Thursday 12 October 17 09:02 BST (UK)  »
I've found the US 1870 Census record for Josiah & Hannah EVANS you mentioned, 'wrjones' & it does look hopeful. I can't find them in the 1880 US Census in same location or definitively elsewhere... Josiah EVANS is a surprisingly common name! But I also can't find them on passenger lists entering the US 1861-1870. Any suggestions? I've looked on Ancestry, FindMyPast, & Family Search plus a few misc websites.
It doesn't appear as though they had any chn per the 1851 & 1861 Wales Census.
The 1870 US Census record has another Welsh couple in the household, William & Anna THOMAS but those are even more difficult names to research... very common names.

Wales / Welsh Emigration records
« on: Wednesday 11 October 17 09:37 BST (UK)  »
I live in New Zealand & I am researching my husband's Welsh ancestors. Are there any resources in Wales that would contain records of emigrants leaving 1860s-1880s? I am looking for a Josiah EVANS, b. abt 1826,Bwlch Newydd, Carmarthenshire; m. 1850 Neath, Glamorgan, Hannah REES. They 'disappear' after the 1861 Wales Census when they are living in Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. Josiah is a roller man in an Ironworks. His 2 brothers, John & Daniel EVANS emigrated to NZ in 1861. I'm wondering if Josiah & Hannah may have also emigrated. I can't find any evidence of that in NZ & they may have emigrated elsewhere.

Australia / PEARSE family in NSW
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 05:29 BST (UK)  »
I live in NZ & I am researching a parallel line of my paternal ancestors, the BROWN family. I am attempting to find an emigration record to Australia from UK between 1963-1968 for the following people:
Frederick Laurence Edmund PEARSE, b.28 Dec 1899 Plymouth, Devon, England & his wife, Jessie Edith PEARSE, nee MONDIN, b. 1900 Maldon, Essex, England. They married in Bedfordshire Sep Qtr 1923. They had one child, Laurence  b. 1920's Middlesex. He m.  1960's Essex, Olive no birth details for Olive yet.
Laurence & Olive emigrated to Australia in 1960's on the SS Fairsky with their 2 chn.
I have found all the above adult family members on the NSW Electoral Rolls living in Winston Hills, Mitchell.... 1968, 1972, but in 1977 & 1980 Frederick  isn't with the family.
It appears that Frederick d. 1982 in NSW per BDM Index on-line but no place of death given.
Is it possible to access NSW Electoral records after 1980 on-line? Ancestry only has them to 1980.
I would appreciate it if anyone could help me find further info on this family.
Regards,
Jane Townsend
