The Lighter Side / Re: Most Generations in One Household
« on: Tuesday 28 June 05 18:29 BST (UK)  »

For about the last 20 Christmas' we've had 4 generations of the same family under the same roof, but I guess it's an unlikely time to have a census.

Other than that, I don't think any of my family would have more than 2 generations in the same house at any one time in living memory, I wouldn't know about any further back as I haven't got that far in my research.

The Lighter Side / Re: Censuswhack

- a surname that occurs in only ONE family in any census
- a first name that only one person in the country has
- an occupation that only one person in the country has

Can I get a point for having an (as far as I can work out) original combination of First and surname, which makes me an official census whack as I will be on the 1981, 1991 and 2001 census and it requires two names just like a googlewhack?  I'd post my name so you could test the theory, but I guess I should keep it at least somewhat secret.

I've tested my theory out by checking Google and the only references with my spelling are to me!

Thanks for the replies and links.

Unfortunately I haven't got anywhere near the census returns bit, as my information comes from an oral family history.  I'm hoping to ask my grandmother the details soon, and it should give me much better ideas about dates and locations etc.  I was wondering just how much I might be able to find out about her life once I did have the details, as I'm more interested in how she and her son lived than the exact facts and figures stuff.

I guess wherever they were would have been a stately home, although I got the impression it was out in the country somewhere (could have been a young child's imagination filling in the gaps though as well).

One additional thing, does anyone know how long the forums are kept live?  I might not be able to start my search for a while and I want to still be able to access the links.

The Common Room / Re: Records of royal family movements in 1800's

Thanks for the help guys, I'll check the links out.

The story I know is a bit vague but other members of the family probably know more details as I've got a fairly long lived family.  Apparently my great great grandfather was born an appropriate amount of time after his mother had been working at some castle or other (I think my grandmother might even know which castle) at which a royal party had been staying.  I believe that I can at least get probable (if not actual) dates, as we might even know her name.  It was indicated to me that one of the Princes at the time (who had a reputation) passed through.  Although it may not have been a royal, it must have been someone of fairly high ranking because the mother was looked after money wise and the child had his schooling and apprenticeship paid for, allowing him to climb the social ladder from pauper to master.

The Common Room / Records of royal family movements in 1800's

Does anyone know if there are records of when and where the royal household, or certain of its members moved to during the 1800's?

I'm researching a possible royal illegitimate child, and wanted to at least be able to say well Prince so and so was living there at the right time.

The family has passed this family myth on for a few generations and it will soon get impossible to research as the people who know the detail required for this sort of family history work won't be able to impart it to me.

Thanks in advance

Occupation Interests / Domestic staff of stately homes

Hi everyone

It's my first post so be gentle if this is in the wrong place.  It might be a long shot anyway, but I figure everything's on the internet if you know where to look.

I was wondering if there is a list of positions occupied by women in stately homes/castles in the 1800's anywhere? (and what they actually did)

One of my female ancestors worked in a castle and although at the moment I'm not sure what her occupation was, I want to know more about her daily life.
