Northumberland / Birkley/Berkley in Northumberland
« on: Wednesday 07 December 05 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am descended from the Birkleys / Berkleys of Newburn, Ponteland, Stamfordham, NBL and certain parts of Durham Co. I am very interested in making contact with other family, especially the descendants of Matthew Charlton Berkley, Cuthbert Birkley, and Thomas Birkley. I am of course happy to provide the research I have done, and if you have hit the proverbial "brick wall" I may have some info that might help you, as far as Birkley / Berkley anyway. Warm Regards, - Doug

I have successfully traced my lineage back to Thomas Birkley, d. 1662, Newburn, NBL area. His son was Richard Birkley, 1650-1704. Does anyone know of the Birkley line in that area going back further than that? I am very interested in any information that someone might have. Thanks in advance, Doug Berkeley

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Newcastle/Newburn/Stamfordham Berkleys
« on: Thursday 20 October 05 18:49 BST (UK)  »
I have located the birthplace, parents, and siblings of Michael Berkley.  He was born in Ponteland, Northumberland. Thomas Berkley (Michael's father) married Dorothy Charlton in Newburn, NBL on May 1st 1785. They had one son, Thomas,1786, who died shortly after birth. The Couple then moved to Ponteland, where their second son was born in 1795(also named Thomas), then Dorothy (b. 1797) Michael (b. 1799, my G-G-G Grandfather), Ann (b.1802) and Matthew (b. 1804). Michael then emigrated to America in the 1820s and married Eliza Powell in Milton, Vermont. This was the beginning of our American Berkley (later Berkeley) clan. If anyone shares this lineage I would love to re-establish contact with our English siblings, as well as American descendants of Michael. I also have the final resting place of Michael, as well as his son William Henry in Iowa, and Jacob in Crete, Nebraska. -Douglas Berkeley

Hello, Joe.   Thank you for the info on Michael Berkley, mine was born 1799-1800 though. This may very well be a relative of his, however, and I will follow through with this anyway. Thanks for the advice on the email, I have modified my message. I'm afraid I'm a little bit of a newbie on the message boards, and all pointers like that are appreciated. I'll try to learn all of the etiquette as quickly as I can to be respectful of the users with more experience.

My G-G-G-grandfather, Michael Berkley, was born in Ponteland about the beginning of the 19th century. His father may be one Thomas Berkley, His mother Dorothy Charlton. If these are your ancestors, or if you know someone connected with this line I would be most appreciative for any contact. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Doug

That very well could be him. As far as siblings go the information on the initial request is about all I have except for his descendants. My email address is art4db@hotmail.com if there's anything else that comes up. I can't find where you went on that site for that... is that a subscription thing I need to pay? Thank you sooooo much.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / 1799 Birth/Parents of Michael Berkley/ Ponteland
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 15:42 BST (UK)  »
I have chased my ancestors all the way across the United States, finally locating the headstone of one M. B. (family records say Michael) Berkley, b. 1799, Ponteland parish, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. (read off the headstone, family records match this). I have pounded the message boards, BDM records, parish records, LDS websites.... the problem is family records say he immigrated in 1832. This would be before the 1841 census. Is there any way to check on his birth & parents prior to 1837 BDM register / 1841 census? I am at wit's end. Can someone help me please? Thank You in advance, -Douglas Berkeley
