South Africa / Re: Are there any census info in South Africa??

Hi Lyn,

The family was and still is, Roman Catholic. He was married in a Roman Catholic Church, and buried in a Roman Catholic Cemetry, so I assume he was baptised a Roman Catholic.... It might be worthwhile checking the Anglican records though.

Thanks.

Hi Ruth,

Thank you so much for looking and offering to give the 2 Gaywoods a call... I greatly appreciate it. I have come to a bit of a standstill on that side of the family, and have been looking through the British Isles Vital Records to see if I could find Harry's fathers birth or death certificates, as the family would of come from there at some stage, but no luck so far.  Anyway, thanks again for you help.

Cheers

David apparently went to the Bridewell on Vagrancy charges around 1824, he would of been 13 or 14 at the time.  Does anybody know if these records could be easily located. I had a look on the NAS, through the catalog, but couldn't find anything that would point me to his record of his vagrancy charges... I did however find his entry for his theft records which were in 1829. Contrary to what I thought we do have these, however we are looking for his vagrancy records which his trial records refer to.... it insinuates there may be more data about where he came from in it.

South Africa / Are there any census info in South Africa??
« on: Sunday 26 June 05 04:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am doing my family history and have just discovered that my great grandfather was born in South Africa... (according to his death certificate). I had always thought that he was born in England.  Are there any census' that have survivied in South Africa.. and are they readily available online? Harry Joshua was born around 1886, his father was a farmer and his name was Edward Herbert Gaywood, no info on his mother.   Harry had migrated to Australia by about 1905 or 1910. I don't know if his family came as well or if it was just him.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for looking at both LDS and scotlands people. I don't have much else to go on, his first two daughters were Isabella and Grace, so his mothers name may be one of those as well.  My mother in-law has been trying to locate him for some years. He was tried at the Old Bailey I think it was called, we have a lot of info on him from the time he came to Aus, but not much beforehand. She thinks he may of come from Banff for some reason, not exactly sure why that is. We haven't located his trial records. He came out on the Layton in 1829...

Thanks again for looking.

Aberdeenshire / Murdoch's in Aberdeen

Hi All,

I have come to a bit of a brickwall... I'm searching for the parents of David Murdoch, born abt 1808.. give or take a couple of years. His father's name may of been Alexander (if he has followed the traditional naming patterns for his children). I'm new to Scottish Genealogy so don't know what sort of records are around. He was put on trial in Aberdeen and sent to Aust around 1829.

Any help on finding his parents would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kind Regards
Bronwyn

Hi,

I'm trying to find the parents of my great great grandfather, William williamson. He was born in abt 1847 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His Fathers name is Alexander, occupation was a ships Carpenter. I don't have any details on his mother. He came to Australia as a stowaway in the 1860's... I was wondering if anyone had access to the 1851 or 1861 census they could see if the family is listed at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks.

Kind Regards
Bronwyn
