Cheshire Lookup Requests / St. Mary's Dodleston
« on: Monday 06 July 15 23:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

If anyone is going to St. Mary's in Dodleston at some point, I would appreciate it if the register entry for the death of Henry Ellis aged 67 (died 4 Feb 1934, interred 7 Feb 1934) could be looked up and recounted.

He is my paternal GGF but is proving to be a classic brick wall in terms of his prior family history.
I have census (from 1901) and wedding certificate data for him, but other than knowing that his father was John Ellis and that he purports to have been born in Rossett (Denbighshire) that's about it - so any info from the Parish register would be greatly appreciated.

I did post requests for information in the welsh forum a couple of years ago but despite some sterling work from members here we failed to find out a great deal more than I already knew - hence I'm trying this new angle having discovered the location of his burial.

thanks and regards

Dave

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Frances Woolrich Wharton - help please

Thanks for the response Garstonite - I agree that the Alice you have described is a distinct possibility - and gives me some further avenues for exploration which is much appreciated.

Are you aware of any on-line resources that could help in a search for a potential marriage for this Alice? I know it's a long-bow to hope that she eventually married the unknown Woolrich who gave his name to Frances but it's worth a try.

If anyone has records of the Woolrich family in or close toTattenhall I would appreciate any info you feel able to relate.

thanks again

JD

thanks again

Dave.

Hi all

A couple of years on from my original request I think that Frances Woolrich W(h)arton is the correct name of this young lady. Woolrich appears to be a fairly common surname around the Chester area whereas Wilderridge does not bring up hits anywhere.

So, my next question is since we know her mother was Alice W(h)arton - is there anyone who can suggest how I might find more about her assuming a birth around 1790 (Frances was born in 1810)?

thanks & regards

Dave

Hmm - thanks Gadget.

Henry would have been around 12 at that time so I guess it's conceivable that he was in service somewhere - he's certainly proving to be an elusive character

thanks again

Hi Eileen

I was particularly interested in the follwing paragraph in one of your replies

"The twins Elizabeth & Margaret, Elizabeth married John Powell who was born in Hope but living in Higher Kinnerton at St Mary's on the Hill and died in childbirth.  Her sister Margaret then married John Powell again at St Mary's on the Hill and is on all the census"

I believe John Powell may be my 2nd Great Grand Uncle - my records suggest he had children Mary, Elizabeth and Martha - can your researches confirm this and if so who the mother of each was?

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Re: Request - Henry Ellis - Rossett
« on: Friday 17 May 13 06:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I've been away digging for a fair while on this mystery - I now have a potential lead which I'm hoping someone may be able to pick up on.

At Rossett Parish Church, there is a headstone for one Mary Ellis of Harwoods Lane, Rossett who died 26 Jan 1924 aged 78. This would put her at around 23 years old when Henry was born in 1869.

In the same grave is Thomas Ellis (Mary's husband) who died 23 Jul 1934 aged 83 and Sarah Ellis (Daughter) who died 7 Jan 1956 aged 78.

I'm really hoping that this is Henry's family - the location and dates fit - can anyone suggest an angle to follow to prove that?

Incidentally - I'm in Australia so visits to Parish record offices are not an option (just in case you think I'm a lazy B*gger).

Thanks

Dave

Family History Beginners Board / Re: One Family at a time???

Hi Kate

I had very much the same dilemma when I started my researches a couple of years back - but have finally concentrated on the 4 parental branches of my tree (i.e my parents and my wife's parents).

It is very easy to get dragged onto tangents when you find a plethora of information available to take you in that direction - but there's no harm in looking when you have the time and it's part of the fun isn't it ;D

The real fun starts when you get the same surname cropping up in a number of families but in the same geographical target area - trying to understand the dynamics of those relationships (i.e. how does Bill Blogg's family tie in with Joe Blogg's who lives a few streets away) can be really challenging - but very rewarding when you discover another line of relations you were not aware of.

Thus I would say go where you have the time and where your main interests lie - but don't be too hard on yourself when you find you are drifting from the main focus of your researches - just enjoy yourself

Best wishes for your researches

Dave
