England / WAS YOUR RELATIVE A SHOPGIRL? - FEMALE SHOP ASSISTANTS
« on: Tuesday 01 October 13 13:05 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am writing to see if anyone could help with my research on the social history of ‘shopgirls’ from 1860s – 1960s, for use both in a book and in our BBC TWO series.
We are writing both book and tv series on the social history of shopgirls, following on from Pam Cox’s previous social history series ‘Servants: the true story of life below stairs’. We will follow the story from the drapers’ stores of the 1860s when young women’s employment outside the home was taking off, through the Edwardian era and the rise of the spectacular new department stores, all the way through to the boutiques of the 1960s.
I am looking for the stories of women who worked in shops specifically in the 1850s - 1870s, when shopwork for women was relatively novel. Was a member of your family or someone you know a shop assistant at this time? Do you know of any diaries, letters or memoirs that can give an insight into her life and work? If so, we would be thrilled to hear from you.
